Do You Feel Comfortable Accepting Gifts
From Clients?

Over the years we have closed hundreds of home loans, some easy, some not so easy. Whether the deal goes smoothly or not, I don't believe that a client should feel bad, or that they were a "pain".

After all, we are getting paid for our services, just as in any other business or profession. It is my belief that you win some, and you really win some. I don't feel that you can ever "lose" with a client, because some of my best referrals have come from past mortgage clients whose home loans were not a walk in the park : )

As with anything in life, every difficulty should be viewed as a challenge, and a way to learn from the experience. This is the only way that growth occurs, and it better prepares us for what may lie ahead.

So.. on to my question and story~
Recently my husband and I closed one of those "not so easy" loans, for a repeat client. It
gift card, accepting gifts from clientswas not the borrower's fault, nor the banks fault. Really, it was over a very minor item on the borrower's credit report, that they had once disputed. It was complete nonsense, as they did not even have a balance on the card, and the borrower had closed the account years ago, after this issue was handled so poorly by the credit card company (imagine that).

Anywho... it took longer than expected, and numerous calls, emails & pressure from us, to get the credit bureaus to finally change the reporting.

After closing, the borrower sent us a heartfelt note with a $100 gift card to a store, thanking us for all of the extra work and time that we put in, to make the loan happen.

This was BEYOND kind, and generous, and I began to wonder if other mortgage or real estate professionals felt that this was appropriate.

I believe that we were fairly compensated for the work that we did, and while I REALLY appreciate it, I actually feel uncomfortable accepting the gift.

I'm really curious to hear your stories, and find out what your thoughts are on the matter, so PLEASE comment if you read this post, and I thank you in advance!

Please tell me, Do You Feel Comfortable Accepting Gifts From Clients?

I've never had to worry about it (grin). I've had the occasional client take me out for dinner or a drink sometime after the closing, but that has been more and more infrequent during the past couple years.

I think it is nice when someone appreciates you just a little more.  Probably most everyone appreciates what you do for them, no doubt.  But on occasion, some will wish to express just a little more, their appreciation...  Be it a bottle of wine, a gift card, an invitation to dinner or some other special event.  It might be nothing more than a nice card !!   Whatever it is, you should enjoy it, appreciate it and consider that they went a little out of their way to express appreciation..  Not necessarly for what you did for them, rather the kind of person both professionally and personally you are.

Congratulations on being a winner twice over in the eyes of these people......

Hi Gina, that was a very nice thing your client did. I am sure he did it because he was truly grateful for all of your  hard work and diligence in closing his deal. Enjoy his gift, go buy something for both (you & your husband) to enjoy and drop the client a nice thank you card in the mail. Good job on closing the deal!!

Gina-

The client needed to show his appreciation for a job he felt was "above the line of duty". As long as the gift didn't come before the loan was completed; or given in anticipation of getting the loan; you should take the gift in stride and enjoy yourself. Congrats on a job well done!

Eric~ Too funny! Yeah, it definitely doesn't happen as often as it used to.

Ken~ Thank you! I really do appreciate that their thoughtfulness and it's flattering to receive gifts from clients, but I am just as flattered and happy to receive a nice thank you card!

Laura~ Thank you! We were very happy to be able to get that loan closed for the client. We will certainly enjoy the gift card, it's just hard not to feel a twinge of guilt.

Bill~ No, can't say that anyone's ever tried to "bribe" me into getting them a loan : ) We get a lot of thank you cards, an occassional bottle of wine & restaurant certificate, but always AFTER the closing. I really enjoy buying gifts for people, I guess I just have a difficult time being on the receiving end.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you & thanks for reading and commenting on my post!!
