KatyHomeFinder - Common Sense Social Media Tips Part 1

I have polled numerous folks lately about business in general in this country and the one item where all parties appear to agree to is that both Big or Small business seems to have lost their basic understanding of plain old business Common Sense. I also believe that in general real estate agents are spending way too much of their time on developing so called Social Media skills and not spending the necessary time improving themselves so can they can continue to add value to their clients real estate needs. Yesterday I actually read a blog written by a real estate agent that said one important citeria for the public to use to select a potential real estate agent should be the agents Social Media presence and expertise and the public needs to inquiry if the agent has ever written a blog!!! For the life of me I can not find or comprehend any correlation between being an excellent real estate agent and Social Media expertise.

Here are my top items for good old business Common Sense for Social Media:

A) Remove from all Social Media web sites your birthday and place of birth. I have had friends tell me that " Gee Bob doesn't everyone already know that". The answer to that question is a big NO. I find numerous examples of folks continuing to put this data on or not deleting this information from the various Social Media web sites. There are computer programs available today that with knowing your birthday and place of birth the program with a very high degree of accuracy can predict your Social Security number.  Obviously ID theft can easily become a nightmare if this occurs. If you think you absolutely have to put something into these fields populate them with bad data.

B) Do not post anything that you would not want to see in tomorrows newspaper as who knows you might just find that actually happening. Yes I know you had a great time on vacation in Cancun with your Bro's but don't let the world see how stupid you looked.

C) Do not engage in rumor or conjecture.

D) Don't provide advice or assistance for items you are not qualified to provide.

E) You can be held accountable for everything and/or anything you say on the internet and assume that the world might be watching at any point in time.

F) Avoid irresponsible behavior as who knows who will see these actions posted somewhere on the Internet. It might be a colleague, a client, a partner, a neighbor, etc seeing your irresponsible actions on the world wide web.

I will stop here with Part 1. If anyone has some additional thought please send me a comment.
