2010 was a great year for the city of Edina and many of the residents did their part to give back to the community. Here are some memorable stories from 2010.

The Rotary Club of Edina helped 6 year old, Moses Mwaura, from Nairobi, Kenya receive corrective eye surgery. The Rotary Club continues to keep in touch with the boy who touched the hearts of many while here for his surgery. Many local professionals came together to help this little boy receive care here in Edina. In October a fundraiser and Gala was put on which raised $ 30,000, which will pay for Moses education through high school and help his family move into his uncle’s home.

Despite the difficult economy Edina residents banded together on many occasions in 2010 to help their neighbors. For example, neighbors near the Augustson home, 5000 Arden Ave came together after the home was destroyed by a natural gas leak explosion to provide whatever the family needed.

Adults are not the only ones that got involved in 2010 so did children. Edina siblings Riley Christianson, 13, and Spencer Christianson, 10 raised over $1,000 that they donated to breast cancer research. The siblings were able to accomplish this by hosting a back yard carnival.

Edina School District bus drivers and student riders did their part in 2010 by collecting 6,600 pounds of food and $1,700 in cash that was donated to Sharing and Caring Hands. The students also held a fundraiser to help those in need from the Haiti earthquake.

Edina opened its new Public Works building in July of 2010, and there are hopes that it will be the last new public building needed in the city for at least 100 years. As a result of the new building the city created an 18 member community advisor team to determine what should be done with the old Public Works site.

The city of Edina also completed its $2.3 million renovation of Braemar Arena west rink along with redoing the outdoor hockey rinks at Pamela Park and Walnut Ridge Park. The renovation was made possible with the help of a $60,000 grant from the Hennepin Youth Sports Program.

These are just a few of the many stories that the city of Edina and the residents of this wonderful city have done to make Edina the best place to live. If you are looking to move to Edina feel free to contact me.
