What you should know about the Aerobic Septic System

By

If you plan on building in Harris county, TX, be aware that some areas are required to install an aerobic septic system. I've come across many people that have never even heard of them and some that have one and have no idea what to do with them.

If you do not properly maintain them, you could end up with a broken system, backed up sewage in your home or yard and fines assessed by the county for illegal sewage disposal.

Please keep the following in mind regarding Aerobic Septic Systems...

1. You MUST have a maintenance contract with an aerobic septic system company. If you don't, the county will find out and come out and hand you notice that if it is not remedied that they will see you in court.

2. Your system has a timer on it that makes it go off during the hours when most people are asleep. Don't adjust the timer so it goes off in the middle of the day so we all get to smell your sewage.

3. If your system requires chlorine tablets (like mine does), then please keep it well supplied with chlorine. Don't over fill it because that will clog it up. I typically put two tablets in mine at a time and I check it every two weeks to see if more needs to be added. DO NOT USE SWIMMING POOL CHLORINE AS IT CAN DAMAGE YOUR SYSTEM!!

4. Mark your sprinkler heads so you don't run over them with the lawnmower!

5. check the sprinkler heads at least once a month to make sure they are still working properly. The sprinklers are made of plastic and can and do break. You can purchase replacements at Lowes, Home depot and some smaller hardware stores. Mine just screw in. Simple as installing a light bulb.

6. Have your system "sludge tank" pumped out at least every 5 years.

7. Get to know your own system. It will save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars. The technicians they send out monthly are often inexperienced and make mistakes. My system was failed one month because the tech said it failed to operate. I went out and checked it, pushed the reset button and it worked so she was called back out to check it again before she filed that failure report with the county.

8. If you ever get high water from flash flooding, tropical storms, etc, turn off the system immediately!! It may save your system. (we learned this the hard way!) We later raised it so it wasn't sitting on the ground. You never know when it will flood in Harris County even when you are not in a flood zone.

In the simplest terms possible.....The difference between an aerobic system and the old systems are that with the aerobic systems the fluids move on to the end of the "line" and are dispersed onto your lawn via sprinkler heads. There is this "box" that pumps air into the first tank and that is "supposed" to speed up the bacterial process. I couldn't possibly explain it all in great detail but here are a couple of websites that help explain it...

I read this post even though I'm not in TX.  Always like to learn something new.  I had to do a little research but now I know the difference between a "regular" septic system and an aerobic system.  Thanks!

Good post...We see lots of redundant information, albeit good info, on AR and I like to see posts about things that are out of the norm.  Thanks!

Cheri, give me a good old fashioned septic tank any day!  That seems like a lot of complicated stuff to have to mess with.  Actually here in our part of FL, a determination is made as to whether you have to have one instead of a traditional septic tank.  Not sure what the criteria is but I know they are more expensive to install and maintain.

Cheri, good information.  Every septic that I have had fail in the last few years has had to replaced by the aerobic septic. I think all of Harris and Montgomery are requiring them but I'm not positive.  I did have someone in Waller County that was able to just repair the existing septic.

Thanks for the info.

I have a similar system and so far problem free.

One tip. You can totally bypass the chlorine tabs if you go with aerobic and anaerobic bacterial additives that digest the raw sewerage. I tried a few different companies with good results and have never had to pump out sludge to date. My system is 28 years old and clean as one could expect at this stage. Chorine is deadly and highly concentrated bacterial additives are safe. Give one of these guys a shot depending on your situation or level of backup.

very light problems www.rid-x.com

medium problems www.oasisenviro.com

heavy duty blockages www.newtechbio.com

All three are reputable companies that see bacteria specific to septic systems.

Happy flushing!

Terry, It's not really that difficult. If you can program a vcr then you can use this system. It recycles water for your lawn and saves on the water you would normally use to water your lawn which makes water bills higher.

Marchel, the county will "grandfather" in the old systems but if the old style system is broken they say you have to install an aerobic system rather than fix the old one.

Jason, Amanda, Brandon, Sharon, Thank you. Glad to help spread the word. The systems have their merits if you are willing to do some research.

Roger, thank you for the info. I just wonder if it would still be safe for my pets and children to be on that part of the lawn if I don't add the chlorine tabs. I will look into the other products. I have used rid-x. Every system is NOT alike. My brother in law has one that backs up all of the time, requires no chlorine, has to be pumped every other month, etc. We have 8 people living in our house and he has less than that but his system is always failing and ours never does. It's good to do lots of research before installing one of these.
