City, School District & County to Launch Youth Safe Haven in Havenscourt Community: Thanks to a grant from the Milton S. Eisenhower Foundation, the City, School District and County celebrated the opening of an international community policing/mentoring model in the Havenscourt community, which has some of the highest number of incidents of violent crime, domestic violence calls and incidents of child abuse. This community policing/academic mentoring model allows us to employ community policing problem solving strategies while wrapping a safety net around our children. To start, 50 students will receive daily homework assistance, participate in enrichment activities, learn life skills and benefit from a trusting, consistent relationship with a trained mentor. Activities will be facilitated by trained OPD and OUSD police officers and civilians. At the same time, officers will work closely with families of the students and neighbors to enhance problem solving community policing in the area, which covers police beats 26Y, 27Y and 30X.
