All homes in Louisiana Require a Smoke Detector with a 10 Year Lithium Battery!

If you are in Louisiana and selling either a Single Famiy home or a Duplex you are required to have a smoke detector in the home with a ten year lithium battery! This law went into effect January 1, 2011!

This is a great law to help put an end to the sensless loss of life that we see in Louisiana due to properties not having adequate Smoke Detectors in the home.

Something interesting as to the recourse if you don't install a smoke detector WITH a 10 year lithium battery...... There are no penalites or fines if the Seller fails to comply with this law nor can it stop a real esate closing from taking place if there isn't a smoke detector in the home. And of course it does also state that the real estate agent SHALL NOT be held liable for the Seller's failure to comply with the law.

However, it is a step in the right direction and gets owners thinking about their smoke detectors.

Also updated for January 1, 2011 was the property condition disclosure which also has an area that ask about the smoke detector in the home.
