e for the Sun Lakes Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day. The event will take place next Saturday, 2/26/2011 at Sun Lakes Country Club (parking lot) located at 25602 N. Sun Lakes Blvd. from 8am to Noon and volunteers will be available to help residents unload their items.
The event is open to residents of unincorporated Maricopa County East of Hwy 10. This is great news for us since residents in unincorporated Maricopa County (which includes Sun Lakes) are not allowed to use any of the municipal hazardous waste drop off sites.
So what exactly is “Hazardous Waste”. Well, it doesn’t have to be radioactive. Household hazardous waste includes antifreeze, batteries, computers, fire extinguishers, mercury, flammables, small electronics and paint. Special note…. leave your explosives, ammunition, large truck tires, 55 gallon drums and medical waste (which includes prescription drugs) at home as these items will not be accepted.
Sadly, this year’s Sun Lakes collection could be the last one if the county doesn’t receive private donations to keep it running. Up to now, money from an environmental settlement helped pay for the hazardous waste collections and disposal. Those funds will run out after this year.

Last year the Sun Lakes collection resulted ion 15 tons of hazardous waste collected from 847 county households.
