Things that turn off a buyer when looking at your house in Marion Ar

Okay, your house is on the market for sale, it is open for business now.  Of course you want your house to be shown, right? Do you know there are a few things that turn off a buyer real fast when touring your house?

The most common turn offs are:

  • Smoke odor
  • Pet odor
  • Heavy scent of air freshener, potpourri, candles that you use to cover up any odor in your house
  • Dirty dishes pile up in the sink
  • Dirty bathrooms
  • Stains on the floor
  • dirty stove and oven
  • smelly garbage
  • an "ungroomed" yard
  • wet towels hanging around
  • general cleanliness of the house
You got the idea.  If you are selling your house, keep it clean and tidy.  Buyers do judge the house from what they see the first time.  You only have one shot to make a good impression, take full advantage of it when there is a buyer wants to look at your house.  If they decide to come back for a second showing, your chance of getting your house sold is even higher.

Usually it is a good sign when a buyer is willing to stay longer to look at the house, but if your house does not smell "pleasantly", the buyer is leaving your house in a heartbeat.  You lost your chance of selling your house then.

Don't let it happen to you, always keep your house ready to be shown, anytime.

Rita, I agree with Gerard but only to a point.  Even if they are used to the odor, after leaving for a while and coming back home they have to smell it.  Sometimes I think they just don't care enough to try to eliminate the problem.

Suzanne, some of them really don't care, even after their agent told them about the problem.

Rita, great post for those wanting to sell their homes. But sadly, many don't listen or their agents are afraid to tell them.

Rita, I don't know how many times we've had our buyers leave a house quickly because of strong smells, whether smoke, pets or TOO MUCH air freshener.

Pretty sure buyers have plenty of their own dirty laundry and dishes, they don't need to see the sellers housework lying around during a showing, definitely a turn off

Oh the piggies and I'm not afraid to tell them but I am never too sure how to lay it out, you don't want to hurt their feelings but you need to get a point across.

Andrea, sometimes doing open house and ask for feedback can do the trick, let the owner knows how many people are aware of it.  If they want to sell their house, they will need to do something about it.

Liz, I think open house feedback is the best way to let the owner knows what the public think of their house.  If they don't like it, then they need to change it.

Rita you would think that the things you pointed out would require no thought at all.  It would seem natural that people would think of these things.  But oh, I forgot, never assume.

Rita - I'm LOL at your suggestions and while I do agree with you about all of your tips, I just wish that the buyers here in my market had the luxury of excluding properties because of some of your listed turn-offs.  Here in Los Angeles & Ventura counties, many borrowers have to have a real vision when they walk into many of the absolute dumps that are here on the market.

Donne, there are plenty of houses in our market to pick, competitions is big.  Sellers who want to sell need to step up seriously.
