Southern Maryland Waterfront - Spring Means the Return of the Osprey It has definitely been a cold winter for residents fortunate enough to live on Southern Maryland's beautiful waterfront. For many throughout the country, returning robins will soon receive a warm reception, an anxiously awaited yearly spring ritual. Southern Maryland waterfront residents look forward to the return of the Osprey to the area in the coming weeks, hopefully sooner rather than later, making bird watching a favorite pastime, its returning cry a distinctive and welcome sound.

Southern Maryland Waterfront - Osprey on watch

The Osprey is a fish-eating bird of prey, whose diet is almost exclusively fish that are detected underwater with its keen vision.  The Osprey sometimes eats small rodents, rabbits, hares, amphibians, other birds and small reptiles.

Ospreys typically mate for life with a life span of seven to ten years. The Osprey breeds on coastal brackish waters as well as freshwater. The nest consists of sticks, driftwood and seaweed built in forks of trees, rocky outcrops, utility poles, artificial platforms or offshore islets. Ospreys generally start breeding around the age of three to four years, although in regions such as the Chesapeake Bay where there is a higher Osprey density, they may not start breeding until five to seven years old. The higher population may create a shortage of suitable tall structures resulting in Ospreys being forced to delay breeding.  Erection of posts to provide more nesting sites is done to ease this problem.

Osprey in the Chesapeake Bay region migrate to Florida and South America in the winter. Current populations of Osprey are not in jeopardy, but during the 1950's and the 1960's, there were drastic declines in Osprey populations in many areas which appeared to be due to the toxic effects of insecticides such as DDT, which was banned in many countries in the early 1970's, resulting in significant recoveries in population.

I love watching the birds of prey, they are just fascinating to me. I've started a photo club and we are heading out to an eagle sanctuary in June or July.

Todd, we have eagles here as well - I love watching these birds when sitting down at the water or boating. Your trip sounds great.
