Wakefield, MA is located a mere 12 miles north of Boston. Wakefield has a great small town feel. It is also a smart choice if you commute to work, as there are two commuter train stops in town. Wakefield encompasses an area of approximately 8 square miles and has two lakes located in the center of town: Crystal Lake and Lake Quannapowitt. Crystal Lake is used as a reservoir for some of the town's drinking water.
Lake Quannapowitt is used for a wide variety of recreational activities, including boating, windsurfing and fishing, and is the primary source of the Saugus river. When the weather is warmer, the paths surrounding Lake Quannapowitt burst with runners, walkers and cyclists. One of my favorite pastimes is taking early evening walks around the lake.
This time of year Wakefield is planning for St. Patrick's Day. The town will hold its 2nd Annual Shamrock Festival from March 11-18. Drop into any of the Wakefield merchants displaying a shamrock in their window during Shamrock Festival Week, spend $25 or more and be entered into a drawing to be held March 18 at the Shamrock Festival Gala evening event. The event will take place at the Americal Civic Center (467 Main Street) on Friday March 18, from 7-11 p.m. The evening will include a Fashion Show, Irish Step Dancers and an Improv Group. There will be a cash bar featuring Irish and domestic beers, wines, surprise specialty drink.
