Why Do You Blog? REALLY!

OK....in my quest to build my business, I've really begun to rely on SEO, and specifically, Active Rain.  I just got my 86th referral since joining the Rain.  Over the weekend, I was reminiscining on why I got into the Rain at all.  My buddy, Randy Keberlein, said "I can't explain what Active Rain really does, but you gotta do it, you just have to."  I took the plunge and for 6 months didn't receive a single inquiry.  Six months later I got my first referral and today I sit here glowing in the bask of my 86th.  Life is good in the Rain.

So I got to thinking.  Why do you blog?  For me, if I didn't need to blog, I wouldn't.  It takes;

  1. Time
  2. Focus, and
  3. Effort.

Putting a good post together isn't about barfing up something.  Nope, it means pre-calcluated thought with an intended result.  I see a lot of folks who, in Illinois, rank high in our rankings, but when a talk around, some people said that they don't produce anything.  So my question becomes are they doing it just for fun or, the competition or to meet people or what?

I know that this year I've change my whole approach.   Less blogging, more precision directed at consumers and realtors.  It's working....and working well.

THANK YOU ACTIVE RAIN!

However, as to the three.  First, tCan't hit your target if you're blindfoldedhe time.  I allocate time everyday to research something that would be accepted and digested well by the consumers.  I throw in my weekly Wordless Wednesdays and Speechless Sundays, and try to be really transparent, but it does take time.

Secondly, the focus is so important.  Without the focus, it's like shooting at a target blindfolded.  Fun to do, but you really cant expect any great results from that sort of approach.  You just cant.  That's how I started.  But now that I've become more successful, I've determined that less is more.  Just put out quality without trying to sell me or shove crap down my throat.

Finally, the effort.  Consistency is the bane of a lot of bloggers.  I saw one fellow Active Rainer who put out 98 posts in one month, but seriously dwindled afterwards.  Remember, it's a marathon, not a race.

I love being here, but plain and simple, if the business came much more easier, I wouldn't blog because it takes time.

Just like everything, the more you're around something, reading about it, writing about it, etc., you get better at it and pick up some great tips along the way.

Larry...it does me good to hear you say that it took you six months to get your first referral. I've been consistently blogging (almost) since I started in January. I've yet to receive a referral but will continue to blog and try to focus on better content.

I'm at the point now that you describe where I'm shooting blindfolded.  In getting started I focused on writing quality content but had little either strategies guiding me.  I'm learning so much more about how to target my efforts now (RainCamp was amazing) and look forward to the business that I know will come from this endeavor.

Hi Larry, I don't think I'll be posting 98 a month once I get started blogging -wow. Once a week to every 10 days is my current goal. Time to build up some bloggin muscle for the marathon ahead.

I think some professions have better results from blogging simply because their target market is much larger. For example, I would think that mortgage lenders and home inspectors would have more business than real estate agents. I think as the cost of your services increases, the less likely you are to get your business from blogging. JMO

My other half, a home inspector, has been blogging for almost three years now and has several hundred clients who found him via his ActiveRain blog. His average fee is just over $500. I, on the other hand, have been blogging for 2½ years, and I have three clients who found me via my ActiveRain blog, two of those within the past two monts, one currently in escrow and I wrote a purchase offer on the other one yesterday.

Larry, I know that it takes a lot of effort and time to blog, but I feel the rewards are fantastic.  I am amazed at how many new friends that I have been getting to know through their posts here on ActiveRain.

Why am I blogging? To get word of my copywriting services and pre-written letters "out there," but also for the fun of it.

A copywriter's life is pretty solitary, and I enjoy interacting with the people I meet here on Active Rain. It is a large part of my "social life." Some who blog often and comment on my posts have begun to feel like old friends.

And then of course, there's that part about liking to write...

Larry,

Great post!  Blogging should be part of everyone's business plan.  But, the posts should be of good quality.  Yes, I participate and Wordless Wednesday and some personal posts, but this is what is also needed so the consumer gets to know who we are.  If the consumer knows us, they will feel more comfortable working with us.

Really? Who in IL doesn't get enough from it? As you say, if you just 'spew' things into the blogosphere without much thought you won't get good results.  I always targeted my audience - where, who I want to hear from.  The other day I commented on a post where the guy was agast that a buyer called to interview him.  That's what your blog does! You wouldn't have that 'interview' if it wasn't for your posts.  Even if that poor buyer asks the wrong questions, to that buyer they are are trying to find out more about you.  If you fail the interview, no business for you.  This is a whole different world now so people better get with it!

How are you going to answer those questions when a buyer or seller call?

As one who's been "lurking" but not blogging I haven't yet reaped the rewards and am still trying to give myself that proverbial kick in the butt to just DO IT...but hearing all these success stories certainly is a great impetus!!

I started blogging when my business was at bottom and I had no other money to market with.  Even when things are slow it gives me a measurable goal to work at - that does bring me business.

Why am I blogging?  Why not?  I could buy leads.  PPC.  I like writing.

I like the idea of a marathon, not a race.  I always tell new people blogging is like juggling.  It takes practice. I blog almost exclusively for consumers on ActiveRain now,

Time is a controllable.  I agree to invest it in something that is just fun with no end purpose in mind is a waste.

I'm not really sure why I blog on ActiveRain.  I would like to think it's for referrals, but I'm not sure if it works or not, because I haven't given it enough time to find out.  I do know, however, that the guy who is number one in our area at ActiveRain with over 400,000 points has only sold one house in the last year.  So, it must not be blowing up his business...

However, I am glad it's working well for you.
