The Pinnacles National Monument is a popular park for rock climbers, bird watchers, hikers of all abilities and strengths, campers and others who like the outdoors. It is located just south east of Hollister, California on Highway 146 in Paicines.
The Eagle Ridge Hiking group visited the park last week while it wasn't too hot yet. They arrived at around 8:30 am with only a few other visitors, no camper of tent in site. They hiked the Bear Gulch Cave trail and the High Peaks trail a 6.7 mile loop which takes about 4 to 5 hours to complete. In the summer time it gets too hot during the day to walk the High Peaks trail but the caves are a great cool hike. Flashlights are required on the cave trail. The Bear Gulch caves were created by huge boulders which formed roofs in the narrow canyon.
Pinnacles National Monument is a great location to spot Condors, bats and other creatures. By the time the Eagle Ridge hikers returned to the entrance and visitor center the campgrounds were full and the park at capacity.
The best time to visit the park is between February and mid June. Bring plenty of water since it gets very hot in the park during the summer. On the weekends the park gets very busy so plan your visit early in the day or better stay at the campground (reserve early) and enjoy a cool swim in the pool.
