Keep it Safe - Safety Tips for House & YardGarden Tools

Now that the weather has warmed up and spring is finally here ,many of us are focusing on our yards and gardens.  If you're one of those do it yourself-ers and plan on getting out there to work outdoors on your house and yard remember to take some precautions and play it safe.

  • Check your ladders - Before getting up on one, check for loose or worn treads and make sure that the ladder is safely grounded.
  • Dress properly before doing any outdoor work.  Preferably, wear sturdy shoes and long pants.  If you're planning on doing your own mowing, make sure to remove stones and debris before startingGarden Tools, to prevent possible injury from debris being launched into the air and back at you.
  • Use caution with pesticides.  Refrain from using it on windy or rainy days when drifting is a problem.
  • Make sure you're up to date on your tetanus shots, especially if you plan to garden.
  • Take precautions before using power tools.  Check them to make sure the cords are not damaged or frayed. Consider using goggles to protect your eyes and earplugs to safeguard your hearing.
  • Stay away from toxic cleaners.  A paste of water and baking soda will remove grease.  A combination of 2 tablespoons of vinegar with 1 quart of water is a great glass cleaner.

Though many common household products and tools can pose safety hazards, with a little bit of forethought and planning you can avoid most of them and Keep it Safe.

Leah, one more tip:  Don't use extension cords with power tools.  They can not only damage the tool, but you, too.  Even if the tool and the cord are UL certified.  The breakdown in the cord can cause damage.

Great tips.

Leah thank you for the reminder!  We (translate BILL) worked on our garden today.  We have a ground hog who likes tender young shoots!!  Bill worked hard to encircle the garden area with wire to (hopefully) keep him out.  Otherwise, I see a "ground hog relocation program" in his future.

Lean ~  I had to lean on this one, as I think it is so important to be aware of those simple tips which can save us from ourselves as we start working on our "Honey Do" Lists.  Nice post; thanks.

Donna - We forget all too often.

Jennifer - I save the climbing on ladders for the hubby and sons.

Suzanne - Thanks for that tip.  All too often I'm tempted.

Bill & CIndi - Ground hogs are not very easy to get rid of.  Good luck with yours and hope the wiring helped.

Tish - Thanks for leaning and admittedly most of the outside work in my home is on that "Honey Do" list.

Christine - warmer would be better, especially with the week of heavy rains that they're predicting.

Marie - haste makes waste and an ounce of prevention.....

Debe - Your braver than I.   Chemical pneumonia sounds awful.  That would be enough to discourage me too.

Leah, Good reminders for working outdoors.  Safety goggles as you mentioned are a must when moving.  It is so easy for things to go flying around.

It is so nice to be out in the yard near the birds and flowers every where.

Enjoy!

Gloria
