Nashville Home Inspection - Proximity of Vegetation to the Structure - 6.13.11

Look at the picture below.  Is this tree too close to the house?

HINT: We should not try to live like the Swiss Family Robinson.

Tree Touching House

ANSWER:  YES!  In this case the tree was there first and the homeowner actually built into the tree.  Sort of like the Swiss Family Robinson.  I know this can be charming and interesting, but at HABITEC we recommend at least 18" between vegetation and the structure.  Inspectors have different numbers, but I don't know of any who approve zero inches.

Thank you,

This type of situation is all too common.  We had to take down a beautiful tree in the front of our home because the builder injured the tree with a backhoe... It was costly and very unfortunate, but it had to be done.

Hi Joan,

Sorry to hear about your tree.  This buyer recognized this tree/house relationship was out of line, so they may have to lose this tree as well.

Thanks,

Richard
