KB Homes has announced that here in Southern California they will be installing smog eating tiles in select communities.

The tiles are manufactured by Boral Roofing based in Irvine, California.  The tiles actually neutralize smog forming nitrogen oxides that are produced by vehicles.  The concrete tile roof on a 2,000 square foot home can neutralize the same amount of nitrogen oxide that a car's typical engine creates during 10,800 miles of driving in one year.

When the tile's surface is exposed to ultraviolet light (daylight) it breaks down the nitrogen oxides in the air into calcium nitrates, which are harmless.  Calcium nitrate that washes off the roof then fertilizes your garden because calcium nitrate is a very mild fertilizer.

Pretty darn cool stuff!

VERY NICE! I've always thought there was more neat stuff like this available, sometimes seems to be political of when it is allowed to be released, such as hyrogen driven engines...with the brains out there, dont tell me it's not yet possible....just a matter of when the Gov't will allow it to be released! (not intended to start any conspiracies-lol)

That sounds like a very interest use of roof tile.

Good luck and success.
