The 4th of July falls on Monday this year. That means that the Independence Day Holiday will extend the weekend into a long summer holiday weekend. Many people will travel to mountains, lakes, sea shores, and to visit relatives and other places away from home. With so many people away, would it be a good use of your time, as one who sells real estate, to hold an open house?
Let's make a couple of assumptions. The first is that you find it worth your while to do open houses. If you don't, you can stop reading because you will find nothing of interest going forward.
The second assumption is that you are not going out of town. Duh! If you are gone, the conversation about an open house this weekend is a waste of time. See the paragraph above about "stop reading."
But if you are in town, if you have a listing that you can hold open or have a colleague who will allow you to hold their listing open, you should do it in my opinion. Why? For all of the usual reasons, including exposing the house to potential buyers and exposing yourself to those who may potentially be interested in your services as a Realtor.
So who will be left to visit your open house if so many people go away on the holiday weekend? Those who are looking for a new home will be your visitors. This is the salient point of this post.
And for you potential buyers: if you are looking for a home to buy, why would you be going away to spend precious time and money that should be spent (time) and saved (money) in the quest for your new home? Yes, that is a little over-the-top, I admit. At the same time, if you are serious about buying a home you already know that finding the right home takes a lot of your time and energy. Paying for it - and the new appliances, furniture, carpet, paint, repairs, etc. - will also take lots of money. Fun is fun! Water skiing...fishing...camping...the B&B by the lake or by the shore or in the mountains...touring the wine country and dining at the special restaurant...are all wonderful. After you have settled in your new home, you should try to find the time and money to do those things. If you do them now, and continue to do them at every opportunity, you may continue to wish you could afford that new home.
Stay home and visit an open house if you are planning to be a home buyer soon.
