Why not use Common Sense?

At the conference I attended yesterday a question was raised. The room was full of building industry professionals: facility managers, government staff, architects, engineers, and building owners. Everyone was already on the same page as to the value of energy efficiency in existing buildings and new construction. There is no debate for us as to the need and positive return on investment. So "Why don't more people invest in an energy upgrade to their existing homes and businesses?" It has been shown time and time again that you actually save more money than you have to spend. You come out cash ahead in the process.

Unfortunately, the answer is simple: we don't like change, we are comfortable with because that is the way we always do it, and we don't know enough to make the change. So as a real estate community, I lay a large burden at your feet. I believe it is your obligation to best serve your clients by talking to them about the utility bills of any home they are listing or buying. I believe that you should know the score from energy yardstick of any house you are showing. We as a country need your help, will you as a profession step up to the challenge?
