PILOT PROJECT TO HELP FISH HABITAT

I live on a dead end peninsula in Shell Knob, on Table Rock Lake.  Last week we noticed several dump trucks, loaded with tree limbs heading down our road the wrong way - going to the end of the road!  Out here in the boonies, we cart off our trash to a land fill - not bring it in!

Then I learned of this great new project to aid fish habitat.  These tree limbs were going to be sunk to create fish beds!  The little fish - shad- need someplace to run and hide so they can grow bigger and be food for the bass to eat and grow bigger.  We are part of a national project!

In 2006 the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation joined federal and state agencies, conservation and angling organizations, and Bass Pro Shops to establish the National Fish Habitat Action Plan.

This plan is to help reverse the loss of 20% of our fish and aquatic populations.  40% of the nation's native fish species are in decline. Habitat degradation and loss is the top contributor to the decline.

In conjunction with the creation of the plan, and with Bass Pro Shops as the first corporate sponsor, the Foundation launched the "More Fish Campaign" to help raise awareness  and funding to protect, enhance and restore abundant and healthy populations of fish and aquatic species.

Bass Pro Table Rock Lake has been chosen as the first pilot project focused on reservoir habitats and  the health of watersheds.

Bass Pro Shops has committed $1.5million over the next 5 years which will be matched two to one by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundations and its partners including the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and Arkansas Fish and Game Commission, for a grand total of $4.5 million being put into this important project.
