He said to me, “I didn’t know you were still in Real Estate”…  When he sold with another agent…

day dream

Oh boy oh boy…  Have you ever heard this line?  One of your past clients, or friends, or SOI saying that they didn’t use you, because they thought you were no longer in the business.

At first you think they are lying, and making up some line to feed you…  Like with a guy says that his wife did something without him knowing trying to pass along the blame to someone else when in reality it was his choice not to use you.

Or you thought they used a listing agent that promised them the world when it comes to getting the house, getting a discount, getting a rebate or just getting something that they think you couldn’t provide…

No, I am not talking about situations like this… I am talking about a real life person honestly thinking that you left the business…  That you no longer sell real estate and got out of this line of work.  That you gave up on this real estate experiment and re-entered civilian life.

The old saying, “Out of sight, out of mind” sooooooo works in this scenario.

We do this job, and enjoy it.  It is our occupation, our livilehood…  So why do we play the secret agent?

I was selling real estate for years, and became a manager of a local real estate office about 10 years ago…  I grew the office to close to 200 agents, and it was successful, growing and profitable.  About 2 years after joining and growing that successful office, I ran into one of my old clients.  At this point, I was no longer selling real estate, just leading.  He was a teacher at my local high school (Cupertino High School)…  He was really happy to see me, and in the course of the conversation, he asked if I was still in Real Estate…

If I was still in real estate…   ???!!!?!?!?!?!!?!?! Me?  Still in real estate??????!!!?!!

Goes to show you, no matter how successful you are…  No matter how smart you are…  No matter how cool and awesome you are when it comes to real estate  If you forget to tell people that you are actually in the business, then they will forget.

It is not up to them to remember you!  It is up to you to consistently remind them…

Facebook helps me remind people I'm in real estate, I post something 1 or 2 times per week. It might be my blog or an article from another source. I find that people like status updates that tell them what I'm doing for work. Headed to a closing or final walk through always gets responses. It's a free way to keep people informed that I'm out there working and closing deals. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a great way of putting it...I might have to put a sticky note on my laptop to remind me of that everyday!

Well you need to stay in people's faces with the fact you are a Realtor and what you do.

Chris, This is a great eye opener and reminder to all of us. We have to continually remind people that we are in real estate. If we don't remind them, who will?  We need reminders like this one... so it doesn't keep happening.

Marketing and advertising is the key!  Name tags are an inexpensive way to let people know you are in the business. An email newsletter is relatively cheap to keep those on your list to know you are still there.

I hear what you are saying & it makes me wonder why people think this? Personally I NEVER ask anyone I know 'are you still a mechanic or dabbling part time?' I think it just shows that the public doesn't take the real estate profession seriously. Not as serious as brain surgery mind you but like it's a regular job that a lot of people have (1M right?).

Tough pill to swallow when it happens! It is so easy for us to keep in touch with those great clients that are raving fans....but we make it difficult and let life get in the way of maintaining those relationships. I bet you will do a better job of touching base!

I always seem to think it's obvious that I'm in real estate and everyone knows it, but then I think about the fact that I don't know what a lot of people do, or I forget what they do and it's clearly the same with them, why am I so special that they will remember me? -Kasey

Congrats, smiley!!  It's always nice to see some of my fav bloggers get the accolades they deserve. Terrific reminder. Thankfully, I'm ALL OVER this community, so they don't ask that, they just ask if I've sold anything lately! Just as tough a question, or "how's real estate going this year for you?" Hey, I just tell them the truth, but always with a positive spin.

Chris, so true, it is not up to them to remember you, it IS up to you to consistencly remind them...  But we forget that and so we need to be remided that we continually need to remind people that we are in real estate.  Continually...

Great post! I'm still smarting from where you hit me "up side the head!"

I agree with Margaret Woda - when I was in a management/ownership, I got sloppy. Also with Debe Maxwell that my weak spot is my early clients.

Goal: get my stuff together in time for Christmas campaign (late October)... .

Thanks, Chris.

It may not be a perfect approach but I always worked under the assumption that a Realtor was most likely to recommend the last home inspector who was in contact with them.

People DO forget. They have a life beyond the part we as individuals participate in so it often pays to do frequent reminders.

Hi Chris,

I think this is more common that many agents realize.  We send an awesome monthly newsletter (www.hightouchnewsletter.com) via snail mail.  We stand out because other agents won't take the time or spend the money.  It is the core of our marketing.  The social media revolves around that.

Chris, I can honestly say that after 10 years in business, I don't recall a single person ever asking me if I'm still in real estate.  Rather, the typical question I hear during small talk is, "How's the real estate business" All my friends, family, past clients, and a lot of perfect strangers know I'm in real estate because it's all I talk about.  They receive regular post cards, and personal notes from me, they see my picture in magazines, they get video updates, and e-mails about my real estate blog posts, and every time they call they hear it on my voicemail.

HOWEVER, I can TOTALLY sympathize with your situation...because back in 2003 I spent some time as a sales manager...and I totally lost my sales MOJO.  I was so busy training agents, etc...that I didn't really have the time to build my business and stay top of mind.  So glad I dropped that role, and went back to selling.
