Many families travel during the holidays. Whether it is to get away from the winter blues or to visit other family members for Thanksgiving and Christmas airports and highways are busy during November and December. If you’re leaving your home for several days don’t forget to make arrangements to keep your house safe.
1. Ideally you will leave a key with someone you trust. Preferably a neighbor or someone that lives close by so that they can check on your home while you’re gone.
2. Hold the newspaper and mail for the timeframe that you’re gone or have someone pick it up daily.
3. Don’t advertise on Twitter and Facebook that you’re away on vacation, more people read and take note of what you tweet/post than you realize.
4. If you can try to leave a car in the driveway while you’re gone.
5. In an ideal world you can also put your lights on a timer inside. If you don’t have a timer you can still leave a light on but, pick one that you can’t notice during the day such as a bedroom or bathroom.
6. If you have a safe put any valuables that you aren’t taking with you in it and lock it. In the instance your house does get burglarized it will protect those items from being taken.
7. If your house is on the market tell your Realtor you are going out of town so that they know to check on your house while you’re gone. It’s a great time for showings because it won’t conflict with your schedule but, your agent should know that you won’t be there so that they can take the proper steps to watch the house.
Taking these simple steps will give you peace of mind while you’re away and allow you to
relax and enjoy your trip!
