"If it be taught that all who are born have a right to support on the land [public], whatever be their number, and that there is no occasion to exercise any prudence in the affair of marriage so as to check this number, the temptations, according to all the known principles of human nature, will inevitably be yielded to, and more and more will gradually become dependent on parish assistance."

Thomas Malthus (1766-1834)

Yes, that Thomas Malthus, the one who predicted the demise of mankind as a species because population growth would outstrip man's ability to provide enough food to feed it.

What he didn't figure into the equation, obviously, was man's ability to advance technologically to increase food production geometrically as population did the same.

What brings about such technological advancement?

PEOPLE PRODUCE MORE, AND ADVANCE MORE, AND CREATE MORE, AND BECOME MORE WHEN THEY ARE ALLOWED TO ACT FOR THEMSELVES AND NOT BE ACTED UPON.  BECAUSE OF DEPENDENCY, THOSE NOT SO ALLOWED, OR IN FACT CONTROLLED, WILL NEVER, EVER, EVER REACH THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL.

And, as Malthus suggests, when they are "taught" to depend on something outside themselves, which he naively thought would be "parish assistance," they will "inevitably" yield to human nature, and become MORE dependent.

I bet he did not imagine that the GUBMENT would replace parish assistance as the provider for those so dependent!

So, as we watch

  • inter-generational welfare grow, and
  • more and more people who think that food is best bought with a stamp, and
  • dependent people who think that the role of "gubment" is to provide for their WANTS, and
  • vacuous people living in filth and slop to demand more and more "a right to support on the land," and extolled for doing so, and
  • the creation of more economic liabilities as opposed to economic assets, receiving taxes and not paying them  -

do you not worry, as I, that we are engendering a generation who thinks that such dependency and entitlement is normal?

Normal...?  Things I grew up being taught were DEVIANT my young daughter thinks are normal.  Imagine what is yet to come!

I hope to Josh, and thanks.  Busy today, but tomorrow's appointments moved to later in the week.  A day off?  Wow!

James - they have already gone to a far corner where they are so they don't have to hear about what's happening.

Well said, Jay.  When I was in an orphanage in Sumy, Ukraine a few years ago, one of the kids asked if I was rich.  They are so accustomed to seeing Americans with large screen TVs, cars, a place to live and food to eat that they think every American is rich.  People on welfare in this country exceed the annual income of many of the people I work with in Ukraine.  It's a tragedy that we have three and four generations of citizens eating at the public trough.  We, as a nation have taught them well to manipulate the system for their own benefit.  I hear people say, "Nobody would want to live like that that if they didn't have to."  Horse hockey.  It's taught, passed on and relived over and over.  Come November 2012!

That post I did on the house that was eventually demolished demonstrated all that exactly Mike.  Those were very adept people at using the system and they earned more than I.

And yes you are rich.

The best thing I have read all year to date. Wonderful explanation of the American Spirit.

That is the legacy left to us by the Founding Fathers, Nick.  Pure and simple.  Thanks!

Isn't it SICK when a political party claims the dependent and the controlled as its "base?"

Hey Jay...so miss you and Virginia.  As the only kid of a single mom, who was laid off by the airlines -- where she worked and retired from Dulles Airport with 38 years -- I'm an example of the system saving some of us.  Even the Romans fed their poor.  The founding fathers believed in Natural Selection from what I've read, too, and owned slaves for the most part.  Times change and we can help a few, who go on to grow.  I'm still paying for my two degrees that I earned myself in D.C. waiting tables.  I'll be your poster kid for 'why it works" to help others, if we can.  Hugs, H

Good evening, Jay. And so goes the Nanny States of America. So sad. This is not what the Founding Fathers imagined, that's for sure...

Than - from the interviews I heard of those people, that is certainly true!

Help yes Hillary!  But short term.  My church gives help for 90 days.  Any longer than that takes money from those who might need it right away.  Intergenerational utter support, as an entitlement, is wrong.

I'm still paying for my schooling - finished 20 years ago!

And my wife's name is Wanda.  Who's Virginia?     ;>)

For sure they are in some far spot where they are now so they can't hear about what's going on Michael.  We accept as normal far more gubment intrusion in our lives than they revolted over!

Jay, it makes it easier for my husband and I that we don't have children. This would be horrible if I had children who felt this way. Who do we blame for this?  Parents?  Society? Technology? Lack of attention?  Lack of discipline and boundaries?

Entitlement was not such a common adjective that I ever recall until lately.

What is scary is that there are MANY Boomers who will be depending upon them for care....

Gayle - as the boomers exit the market place, and right now I understand at a rate of 10,000 a week, others will have to step up to take their places.  If people are living off mom and dad in their basement, playing video games and asking why their laundry isn't in their drawer, who is going to step up to pay the taxes that more and more seem to feel entitled to?

I just painted a wonderful scenario, didnt' I?

Who do we blame?  All of the above.  Don't forget the schools, that teach this sort of thing.

Read Mr. Washington's proclamation in 1789 and tell me if that would not kick up the dust today!

Jay,

That is how society declines. We begin to accept as normal those things which never were. :)

Exactly right Steve.  And if you remember your 1984, the way things get accepted in the society is by changing the name from what was abhorrent to something more palatable.

Abortion to choice.  Homosexual to gay.  Euthanasia to right to die.  Wants to rights.  Deviancy to mean spirited (kind of the opposite).  And so forth.
