GOOD OLD HOUSES

By

I just read an article in the August issue of National Geographic about New Orleans. I was struck by the photo of an 82 year old man who built his house with his own hands in 1953.. It said that when Hurricane Rita flooded the Lower 9th Ward in 1965 the water came almost to the top of the decorative archways that he had made himself. (He was a platerer by trade). Hurricane Katrina filled the house to the ceiling. It ruined his clothes but  the house suffered no structural damage except a broken window pane. THAT IS A SOLIDLY BUILT HOUSE!!! Mr. Gettridge says that he has been in the building trades all his life and canstill build anything he can think of and is rehabbing his home.

That's a recycling project I'm not sure I would take on, but I sure am thinking I would like to look him up in November when I go to the NAR Convention!

He sounds just like my Father, who always said he liked to build things that would last forever!  He hated to do temporary things like paint.  But he'd build a garage out of block and stucco that could stand the test of time.

Where have all the old world tradesman gone...

The world has become so fast paced and the need for instant gratification so widespread that it seems like these valuse are not held by many of us any more. Hopefully that will change as we see more and more of this kind of thing, of people realizing qwhat is really important and that what is valuable is worth working hard for.
