Fairfield Metro Train Station Opens in Fairfield CT

After being in the works for more than a decade, the long awaited Fairfield Metro train station in Fairfield CT has officially opened with its first New York City Grand Central bound train rolling through.

The new station, which is the first main line station in Fairfield County on the New Haven rail line in more than half a century, is the third station in Fairfield, with the other two being in downtown Fairfield and in the Southport section of town.  However, the new station is the only station fully accessible to people with disabilities.

The Fairfield Metro train station offers 1,400 parking spaces with 500 permits having been issued thus far. There are plans to automate the parking lot access  with permit scanning and gates.  The standard $6 day parking fee is still in effect.

Commuters should note that there are currently NO restroom facilities at the station.  They will not be available until the 200,000 square foot concourse building, which is being constructed adjacent to the eastbound passenger platform, is completed.

The 35-acre site south of the station, once an iron foundry, will eventually be home to several other buildings including a Hilton Hotel, an apGrand Central Terminalartment building along the adjacent Ash Creek, and five office buildings.   No specific timeframe for construction of any of the proposed buildings has yet been announced.

Metro North train stations throughout Fairfield County service thousands of commuters each day.  Parking lots along the New Haven line are generally filled to capacity.  The new Fairfield Metro station should alleviate the overcrowding and congestion issues.

Service from the Fairfield Metro train station to Grand Central runs from 73 – 83 minutes and is a great way to get out of traffic and save some $$$ on gas, parking and maybe save a little of your sanity at the same time.

I read about this, Barbara, but your post is better than anything I read.  I usually drive to New Haven if I am going to NYC but Fairfield sounds like a great option--especially the parking!

Barbara, that's a station that will see a lot of traffic once it's completed. That has far more value than that Bus-way to Hartford they're ramming at us.

Peggy -- Plenty of parking at Fairfield.  I usually leave from the station and have to go much earlier to allow time to find a space.  I'll be heading to the Metro station now. The whole complex should be really nice once it's done.

Ed -- Big difference between this station and that bus-way. The trains are full, many times just standing room; those buses have been projected to have very few riders.

Barbara, is this the station that will also be servicing the Bridgeport area?

Peter & Linda -- It's especially great to take the train to work if it works for you to bypass all the traffic congestion. Nice to have that extra time before/after work to relax or unwind.

George -- Bridgeport has its own stop right before/after this new station if you need to get directly into downtown Bridgeport. The new Fairfield Metro station is on the Bridgeport/Fairfield line so yes it does service the Bridgeport area.

Barbara, this is going to make going to the City so much easier for so many! I can't believe Fairfield has been without a train for so long.
