Wal-Mart is one step closer to building a distribution center in the Kingman area.
The retail giant has approved a payment to secure water from the Interstate 40 system, Mohave County Economic Development Department Deputy Director Jonas Peterson said in a news release Friday.
The project manager for the center contacted Peterson with the information.
"Securing the water isn't exactly a groundbreaking, but it certainly shows they are serious about building the distribution center," Peterson said.
Wal-Mart is facing a one-time hookup fee of $1,420 per gallon per minute for 200 gallons a minute - totaling $284,000 - Mohave County Public Works Director Mike Hendrix said.
In February 2006, Wal-Mart purchased land for the center next to Griffith Energy Plant along I-40, seven miles west of Kingman.
At the time of the purchase, officials with Wal-Mart said the facility would begin operations in the fall of this year.
In July 2006, the county approved a grading permit for the project.
In October of last year, Wal-Mart officials put the project on hold.
Officials with Wal-Mart had said the facility was only going to be built when other centers are at full capacity.
The total project is slated to be a 1.5 million square feet, the first phase of which is an 880,000-square-foot building that will be built on 23 acres.
The facility initially will employ about 500 people.
It's estimated to have a total employment near 700 when the center is fully operational, a spokesperson with Wal-Mart said in March 2006.
The distribution center will serve as a warehouse for surrounding Mohave County supercenters as well as the Sam's Club in Bullhead City. It will also serve Southern Nevada, California and other areas of Arizona. There is no timetable for when construction will begin.
