The city of Clearwater, Florida, has offered the city of Saint Petersburg, Florida, $600,000 to use in expanding the Albert Whitted Airport in downtown St Pete, Florida. According to the St Petersburg Times, this is subject to approval by the FAA. One of the gems of downtown St Petersburg is this airport, which is small and within walking distance of downtown. There are no commercial airlines flying here - they generally fly into Tampa International Airport.
A new terminal building is underway, thanks to the generosity of John and Rosemary Galbraith. The new funding, if approved, will pay for a new ramp for parking additional aircraft adjacent to the new terminal. It is hoped that the terminal and ramp will be completed in time for the next Grand Prix to be held in Saint Petersburg in the spring of 2007.
