Counseling in Real Estate - Does It Make A Difference

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Alpha Prosperity Management

In my other life, (the full time job) I have been counseling individuals in crisis for about 17 years. I have worked in the fields of community relations, law enforcement, and city governments. I am a big proponent of counseling because I have seen how it can make a difference, in a positive direction.

Currently, the real estate industry is taking a big hit with all the foreclosures, and recent downward spiral in the sales department. Could this be the time to re-educate and counsel about real estate practices, mortgage lending and credit practices? Maybe this is a good time to prepare for the up-turn, and educate future consumers and home-buyers, so that history doesn't repeat itself.

How many of you actually take the time to educate or counsel your buyer? Or do you assume that the individual should come to the table already educated and ready to buy? Does either practice create a long term relationship between the agent and the consumer? Which do subscribe to?

Create opportunities for consumers to learn and ask questions, to fully understand what the home-buying process is all about. It doesn't take a whole lot time or money to do and it provides an opportunity to leave your mark. Your real estate assistant can coordinate these. If you don't have an assistant, an event or meeting planner can put one together for you. You can host a first-time home buyer seminar at your local library, or local coffee shop. From there you can meet with individuals one on one, making sure they have a good understanding of the process before they sign the papers.  You can be the catalyst for growth in a under-served or low-income neighborhood.  You can be a part of the solution. Knowledge is power.

The counseling process is a valuable thing. It creates opportunity, it facilitates education, information and knowledge about the buying process and it can create healthy long term relationships.
