When the news hits that a little bundle of joy will be entering into your life and home, there is much preparation to be done. Not only do you have to read up on “What to Expect When You’re Expecting,” but you also have to make sure that your house is ready to handle such an adorable yet complex addition to the family.

Before Birth: It is best to prepare in advance, because once that little baby is born you won’t have much time to baby-proof your home. Create a list of all the places that could pose a threat to a child to determine what supplies you will need to safeguard these areas. Main cautionary places include toilets, electrical outlets, windows, stairways, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, and appliances. Here is a more detailed baby-proofing list.

Home from the Hospital: Home care is very important to the health of your newborn. Babies will bite, chew and drool on just about anything they can get their tiny hands on, so make sure you are not harboring germs in your home. Select a natural cleaning product so that your baby will not be exposed to any harsh chemicals. The Honest Company has created a whole line of baby-safe products, ranging from dish soap to diapers.

Baby’s First Steps: Despite their small size, children and all their belongings can take up a lot of room in your house. Between clothes, toys, diapers, bottles and binkies, it can seem overwhelming to maintain an organized home. To help keep your home clean and clutter free, design the baby’s nursery to be fully functional, with sufficient space for storage. Built-in bookshelves, toy chests and storage compartments are very useful.

From Toddler to Teen: You may think you have a lot of time before your baby is talking, walking and experiencing the wrath of “time-out”, but just remember how fast those 9 months flew by. Soon your peaceful nursery will need to be transformed into a bedroom, with designated areas for sleep, playtime and homework. As home builders in Tampa Florida we have built many homes that have been customized for families with children. Playrooms, homework nooks, built-in laundry shoots and chalk-board wallpaper are popular kid features.

A custom home is ideal for those who have already started a family, or for couples who envision a future filled with little ones. Being able to design the perfect home for you and your family is one of the greatest benefits of building a custom home. If interested in learning more, contact us.

Great information Jon.  I wish I had seen something similar when we were about to bring Alec home almost eight years ago.
