The Spring is a great time for planting lots of things, especially trees.
Early Spring planting is ideal, preferable before bud break, but early fall will work too. Just make sure to avoid Summer planting when temperatures are at their highest.
Dig a shallow broad planting hole - 3x as wide as the root ball, but just deep enough to hold the root ball. You want to avoid planting trees too deep because this can stress the tree and suffocate the roots.
Stake the tree if you need to, but studies have shown that trees develop stronger trucnk & root systems more quickly when not staked.
Use mulch to prevent moisture loss and help moderate soil temperatre and reduce competition from grass & weeds.
Keep the soil moist and water the tree once a week if there has been no rain.
When choosing a tree, if it important to consider the following:
- Climate & soil type
- Size of the site and the mature tree size
- Drainage of the site
- Trees that are native to the area
