Tiger at the Black Pine Wildlife Sanctuary in Albion, Indiana

By

I went to the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary in Albion, Indiana, last week.  Black Pine is a non-profit exotic animal sanctuary, a "last chance" refuge for captive-raised non-domestic animals in need.  They give "rescued and retired exotic animals a safe haven, and educate people and enhance their knowledge of exotic and endangered species, and responsible pet ownership." It is a wonderful place and they are doing excellent work there for exotic animals who have been rescued or retired.

We booked a private tour of the facility, and the Executive Director, Lori Gagen, gave us a wonderful behind the scenes, close up tour of the animals… lions, tigers, bears, leopards, cougars, wolves, foxes and more.  With a private tour, we could get within touching distance of the animals.

Some of the stories of how these animals were found and rescued were really very sad, but they do have a wonderful home now and are well cared for by a great staff at Black Pine.

Here is one photo I took of one of the tigers.

Roberta,

Can't believe you got that close to them!  I'm glad they are being taken care of.  I hate the thought of any animal being abused.  Great picture!!!

This is hysterical, Roberta.  Bruce Walter from Indiana sent me this link because I was just in INDIA and went on a tiger safari, TWICE.  Didn't see one tiger.  He had told me I should have gone to INDIANA.  I see he was right :)

These sanctuaries are amazing labors of love, volunteerism and donations..  We have one called In-Sync in Wylie, Texas.  I have visited many times with a friend who is a volunteer.  Great post and gorgeous photo!

Roberta, this follows up on our April Pet Project contest, which spotlighted among other things, animal rescue. Phenomenal photograph, REALLY. I am going to invite you to our group, and see if it can get featured by our esteemed Group Founder, Mona Gersky. (Also, did you know that April is National Prevention of Animal Cruelty month?)

Joni Staples re-blogged this, that's how I found you!

Hi Joni - Thanks so much for the kudos and for re-blogging and suggesting my post!  Wow - I am really honored and pleased that you did that.

Kristin - many thanks ~ I'm delighted you think I deserve a feature.

DeeDee - thank you for the compliment.  I too hate the thought of animals being abused, and especially wild animals that should never have been in private homes to begin with.

Jane - that is too funny and sort of sad that you went all the way to India and didn't see any tigers.  Well, there are lots of them here in the US - but not many, if any, left in the wild here.

Sharon - I never heard of In-Sync, and I lived in Texas for 22 years.  If I go back, I will definitely check it out.  Thanks for stopping by to share that info, and thanks for the compliment on my photo.

Margaret - I'm glad Joni shared my blog - and thanks so much for your kind words.

Gayle - thanks for the invitation ~ I accept!  And thanks for the info on Animal Cruelty month.  I don't think I knew.

Jane, thank you!  I am so thrilled that you and the others who commented like my photo.  And I am thankful for sanctuaries like this one too!

Hi Roberta, The sanctuaries are so important to provide quality of life to these animals. Your Tiger photo is just wonderful and beautifully tack sharp in the details.

Hi Roberta.  I came by way of Joni's reblog.  What a spectacular photo and sounds like a great place though I'm not so sure that I'd like to get quite that close to some of those animals.

William - I agree that the sanctuaries are important and ever more vital with more and more people getting wild animals for pets and some wild animals being mistreated and housed in unsanitary inhumane conditions.  And thank you for the compliment on my photo!

Leah - Thank you!  I'm so glad you came by, and I am glad that Joni reblogged!  I was pretty close to the animals - but I also had a really good zoom lens too.

Steve - Thank you.  These animals are really huge and incredibly powerful and not something you want to mess with-- this one was watching me very closely.
