Cool Ideas for Increasing Curb Appeal

Now that spring is well underway, Gil and I would like to welcome all of our fellow central New Jersey home owners back to our blog after a brief hiatus. We've got a new schedule – we'll be posting every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – so be sure to bookmark us and come back frequently!

Whether you're planning to sell your home this season, or you'd just like to improve your curb appeal for the approaching summer months, sprucing up your property is always a terrific idea. According to HouseLogic, it's also a fact that most of us would rather do just about anything than spend time working on their lawn! Think we're kidding? They recently shared the results of a Consumer Reports survey of adults nationwide asking what tedious chore they'd actually like to do; only 7% said they'd do yard work. Compare that to the 33% of said they'd prefer to visit their in-laws!

So what's a home owner to do? Like most of us, you'll probably bite the bullet and join that measly seven percent, doing the bare minimum to keep your place looking nice. Or, you could get creative and actually replace your lawn. It sounds extreme, but – especially if you suffer from seasonal allergies – it might just be an option to consider. Here are some ideas for your consideration:

Save money on the grocery bill by replacing your lawn with a garden. It's not necessarily a lower-maintenance option, but it's a great use of space and ensures that the produce you're eating is free of pesticides!

Replace grass with ground cover. Many offer colorful blooms, as well as a hardy and fragrant substitute for sod.

Extend your patio, or create several adjoining patios. Consider using pea gravel as well – it's foot-friendly, and spills disappear without cleanup!

Hit the rocks! You could replace the entire lawn with a rock garden. And if you place blocks of granite in sturdy soil that's been composted, you can grow ground covers between them to help soften the look.

Like it or not, lawn maintenance is part of creating and maintaining your home's curb appeal. What kind of creative ideas have you seen or used to make the chore easier? Leave your comments below!
