The focus at High Country Boutique & Gallery is clothing
for women who want a functional wardrobe with an artistic flare.
“We want women to feel comfortable and confident. Confidence comes from knowing what styles are best for you. The shop is a closet from which we combine elements to make a workable wardrobe for our clients. Less can be more. We start with core elements and build on them.”
Donna Toney opened High Country in 1991 as a gallery of American art and fine crafts. She sold American art clothing, jewelry, art and fine crafts. In 1995, she added ready-to-wear clothing with her artsy customers in mind and wearables immediately became the focus in the shop.
In 2005, High Country Boutique & Gallery took a leap forward when Donna and her husband bought a downtown Lewisburg building. At the same time her youngest daughter, Erica returned to Lewisburg and became her store manager.
Donna explains, “Both Erica and I have the talent to see how things relate. We enjoy combing color, line, and proportion whether it’s on a person or on a wall. Our customers get the benefit of these skills for free.”
The core of High Country Boutique’s clothing is designed by Eileen Fisher. “I see her as an American artisan who made it big after starting out with her rent money. She provides the style and quality that I believe in. I build my other clothing selections around hers. Many lines can’t stand up next to Eileen’s. Our customers from the cities say they love to shop with us because of our presentation and the intimacy of a small boutique,” states Donna.
Though the art gallery has shrunk in percent of High Country’s business, “It still flavors the store. We have a global focus now, rather than just the USA. We sell Shona stone sculpture by some of the top artisans in Zimbabwe, old and new crafts from many African countries, and fair trade jewelry and scarves from women in Africa and Asia. Women artisans from the Americas are still well represented. Most of our fine art jewelry is by artists from the USA.”
