Professionalism

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with A-Z Atlanta Realty GARE#284610

As a new Realtor, I always believed that one of the most important aspects of this business is one professionalism and two relationship building.

It seems however that not everyone in this industry sees it this way.  Yesterday I referred one of my clients to a loan officer to be pre-qualified.  I have already pre-qualified my client, but since I don't have the ability to run a credit check etc.  I sent him to a loan officer I previously worked with.  I fully expected that  it would take 24 hours to get a response, but I also believed that as a professional the loan officer would call or email me with a status on my client especially after I called her, left a message and sent an email as well.

I am ticked off because I can't get a response; imagine just how my client feels.  This is a first time home buyer to boot.  I have always seen myself as my clients advocate, and after the experience with this loan officer I don't intend to give her any more business.

I believe that you must earn my business and work hard to keep my business.  I am not asking too much to have a return call either to myself or my client, yet this particular loan officer is not polite enough to provide a courtesy call, email or something.

Just a little piece of advice to anyone receiving a referral.

1.  Always take a minute to contact the person sending you a referral to say thank you.

2. If you receive a call from the party who made the referral follow up.

Ava, You say as  new Realtor. One of the things you will quickly learn is pick your team carefully. By team I mean Title, Escrow, Lenders, Termite people, Inspectors etc. Many think we get kick backs from lenders. I do not but what makes me choose one over the other is definately communications skills.

Ava,

I couldn't agree more. It's amazing to me how many people act as if they're entitled to our referrals and can't even take a couple of minutes to call and say "Thank You," much less a call to let you know the status. I'm fortunate to have a couple of great mortgage guys that I can depend on but I've had my fair share of less-than-stellar ones I've given a shot to in the past. Good luck with this one.

Ava I know just how you felt.  I made a referral to someone who took over a week to do the credit check and then failed to follow up.  You can be certain I would never refer to that person again.

I agree. I think the #1 issue in our industry is professionalism. A lot of people just need to pay attention to the basics, such as calling people back and keeping them updated. I got a call from an agent today who has a client ready to spend at least $1M on commercial property. The other agent she tried to use didn't keep up with the client. Who knows if they are just swamped or has other things going on, but they lost a nice sale because they couldn't pick up a phone.

Professionalism demands all the things that you have mentioned, however, do find out what the problem is before you write off the loan officer completely. Life sometimes interferes with work. We live in a time that often wants us to forget or ignore that fact.

An agent in my office did not reply to anyone for any reason for several days.....her husband was killed on his way home for dinner in a freak rockslide that buried him and another car on the highway. She should not have been expected to call anybody back about an offer under those circumstances, I don't think.  She did have someone call the office and explain the circumstances after the first 24 or 36 hours but she had her own shock and that of her children to cope with and did not need anything else. This is an extreme example, but do remember to give people a chance to explain before you dismiss them.

As was mentioned earlier, you will sort out the people you can rely on and want on your team. If you pick them with care, you will know that you can rely on them.

Deb,

I am sorry to hear about the loss in your office.  Of course with a situation like you described no one would respond, and that's understandable.

Find someone good in the mortgage business for your team. I have been using the same person for over 15 years. I know when I send someone to Margaret things will be taken care of. If there is a problem she will give me a heads up. Otherwise she will update me and then we close. I think if her as the skinner and I am the hunter. I send them to Margaret and I go back on the hunt. It has worked well for both of us.

Hope you have found the right Mortgage person.

Good Luck
