I'm not only a Silver Spring, MD area Realtor, I'm also a mom of 2 beautiful little girls. My girls are little artists and love to paint and craft things, thus I'm always on the look out for easy, and preferably green, craft ideas. Halloween is the perfect time to get crafty with your kids.
I got the idea for a Milk Jug'O'Lantern from greenkidcraftsblog.com. We pretty much had all we needed at home, no expensive supplies needed!
1. You need: milk jug rinsed out (save the lid), orange paint - use acrylic if it will see a lot of use or spray paint if you intend to have it sitting outside, green pipe cleaners, silk leaves (I saved some from an old flower bouquet for crafts like these, you can also cut some out from felt paper), black duct tape for eyes, nose, ears (we opted to paint them on instead), fake candles
2. Cut a hole in the back (to add the fake candle). Paint or spray-paint the jug orange (do the handle last, it's easier to rotate around), paint the lid brown or cover in brown tissue paper, felt paper etc.) and let dry.
3. Decorate: I added the green pipe cleaners and punched a hole into the silk leaves. Hubby and my daughters painted the faces.
4. Add fake candle, turn off the lights and voilá: a Milk Jug'O'Lantern!
P.S. These also make great lanterns to carry around while trick-or-treating.. just tie a flashlight around the handle and set inside. Make sure you use acrylic paint or spray paint if like that idea, otherwise the paint will come off too easily).
