Saturday, October 20, 2012 opens the first day of hunting season with firearms in Georgia.  Please, hunt, thin the herd in my area (Putnam County).  They LOVE my rose bushes and vegetable garden in the summer.

But when you are hunting this season be mindful of all the safety issues.  Be careful, be sure and follow the laws. A quick link to the GA DNR we site where the regulations can be found is a good place to start.  Some counties allow hunting in baited fields because the deer population is so out of control, Putnam County does not.  You should also wear a safety vest and never shoot unless you are sure. You can also purchase your Georgia Hunting license on line. Remember to be cautious of other hunters who are also in the woods.  Be sure before you fire.  Hunt with a Buddy system.  Be careful out there.

Drivers should be more mindful of deer during hunting season also.  The sounds of shots in the woods startle deer and make them run.  So watch the sides of the road much more carefully for deer during the hunting season.  And I can tell you from personal experience cars and deer do not mix with good results.

Tammy, Good point. Also at the twilight hour they move a lot; especially if hunters are in the woods.

Yes, let's kill a deer because it eats roses.  I'm sure they're not personally eating the roses in your garden to be annoying -- but kill them anyway ;-)

Carla- they eat my roses because there are too many of them.  They starve because they are too many of them.  And the people I know who hunt also eat what they kill.

Tammy - there is no bigger animal lover then me, but it's far more human to thin the heard rather then have them die of starvation. It has to be done in our area too - so many are getting hit by cars and they don't die right away which is really inhuman. It really is about the bigger picture...........but I could never do it.

Kristine- I never say never.  But I do not hunt, nor does my Donald.  For years the hunters in our area had such love tag limits annually that the population just exploded and here too they do get hit on the roads.  And my post is mainly in the reminding people of the safety factor.  A few years ago a GA wildlife officer was shot by a hunter on accident.  And they (hunters) do really need to be sure before they fire.  And drivers really do need to be more careful driving when hunters are in the woods deer hear gunshots in the woods and they run, sometimes into the street.

Our season is the Monday after Thanksgiving - every year.  They make it a "public school holiday!" because so many kids and teachers wouldn't be there if they didn't close down for the day.  I personally think it's crazy, but being a Pennsylvanian I am used to it and as a kid always enjoyed the "holiday"

Good morning Tammy,

Good post..there are hunters and as Kristine says it's far more human to thin the heard rather then have them die of starvation. I'm not a hunter but do respect this premise.

Good posts and tips Tammy.  I'm not a hunter, but I'll eat the heck of some deer jerky!

I had always been against hunting until I heard that it can actually help.  I am not a hunter, but these are good safety tips for those who do.

Very informative, Tammy.  Gotcha!  Seriously, this is something Ialways worry about.  I have personally known a person who shot another by mistake.  It was well before all the litigious society got going, but the guilt was enormous, and he still carries it with him.

Ron- it is very serious and I even worry when I walk glen.  He's a giant dog who is the color of a deer.  I even worry when he's in my fenced yard during firearms season.

Brenda- I'm okay with hunting for food.  I just wanted to remind folks to be careful with it.  And our deer population is huge here and I see some very skinny deer because there's not enough food in the wild for them.

Jared- my brother makes that.

Dorie- me either.  Like I said earlier I would never say never.  If I needed to feed my family I would.  But until such a time as that I choose a supermarket, but I do understand and support safe hunting.

Greg- I agree that there is a natural order of things and frankly if dinosaurs still roamed the earth wouldn't we be food?

Yes, we would.

I love deer meat. I think it's unkind to kill an animal and not consume it. But that's just me. To each his own.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

You say: never shoot unless you are sure. And then you say it again: Be sure before you fire. This must be some kind of phrase with which I am unfamiliar. I don't know much about hunting. Although, I'm betting a hunter would say something like, "I am sure I'm gonna shoot that son of a b."

Elizabeth- yes hunters will know that means be sure you've got the line of sight, be sure you of your target and be sure of WHAT you are aiming at.  And I'm not so sure they would say son of a b.  At least the hunters I know repect the deer and are shooting it for food.

Liz- they won't shoot Bambi, but yes, some of Bambi's parents must be thinned out each year.

Greg- It's not my favorite.  I think I'm personally to tenderhearted.  But I have had it and I likely will again.
