Thanksgiving - tips for oven cleaning

Saw an ad on TV recently re cleaning the oven BEFORE cooking the turkey; supposedly, the turkey will cook and brown better and more evenly in a clean oven.

Oven cleaning

Check out this pin on Pinterest: Thanks to original pinner who said: I think I'll try this next time. The appliance repairman told me using the self-cleaning feature takes years off the life of an oven.

The best oven cleaner! Cover the bottom of the oven with baking soda; then pour vinegar so it's all wet. Let sit about 20 minutes or so, then wipe all of it out with damp cloth or sponge. I leave my oven door open too. After drying you may see some white residue, wipe again.

And, something that has saved me from lots of cleaning -- if you have an ELECTRIC oven, you can place a sheet of aluminum foil on the floor of the oven, under the rack; it will catch drippings.  When it's dirty, just remove the foil and replace it.  This will save you dozens of oven cleanings.

Rosalie - it's a great tip, and sounds WAY less toxic than the spray oven cleaner that clears out the house!  Now I just have to find time before Thursday morning to get it done...!

Thanks for the response; and even though the scent of the vinegar is strong, it's not nearly as bad as the oven cleaner!  Understand about finding time to do it!  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Rosalie, we have three cats and one has "asthma" hence when I use the "self cleaning mode" I have the exhaust fan, the regular fan and the windows open until the job is done....BTW I did not know that this feature "shortens the oven's life expectancy" thank you for the heads up!

Hi, Endre!  You are more than welcome...can tell you our dog hates when we clean the oven with the auto cleaner.  Major help for us is lining the oven floor under the burner with aluminum foil.  Can honestly say it has saved us hours!  Hope you have a wonderful holiday season.  Rosalie

Rosalie I hadn't heard this.  But, oven cleaning is Jim's job anyway, LOL.
