Is this NEW on ActiveRain?

By

ActiveRain LogoHave you posted content to ActiveRain recently?  Is this NEW?

I noticed it this morning.  I have not posted to AR in a couple of days.  Is this NEW?

Original URL content

The "This is not my content but I have permission to repost it" checkbox is NOT new. That has been there a long time.   The place for members to provide the Original URL content" is new?

Or has the Original URL content box been there and I am just not paying attention?

The pop up seems to have not changed.

  • No points
  • Symbol

Mine may look slightly different since I have disabled Re-Blogging on ActiveRain.  Does this change anything for most of us? Do you share content on ActiveRain that is not your original content?

There are plenty of folks on AR who try to pass off non-original content as their own.  If they don't already check the box they likely won't put in the original URL either.

I think it is a wonderful idea, not sure why it has not been there before BUT I wonder if those who copy and paste content to ActiveRain for points  or another reason would fill it in.

Is it to encourage members to share content that is not original on AR?

I had another question about the Original URL box as it relates to those who repost their content from their own Blogger.com blog, a WordPress.org site etc.

That was my thought Cindy

hmmm, looks new to me but then I havent really looked for awhile. I would think if you are reposting your own content from your own wordpress blog then you have permission...I think this is a good idea, whether its new or not..

Karen They may own it but if they want to tell Google that this is not the first instance of the content and not give AR the credit for the content OVER their WP.org / Blogger.com content, this same field would work for that.  I did NOT play with it to see but I will.   Does it tell Google / search engines that this is something that is not the original.

Ki I was told its new as of yesterday.

I noticed the change as well, fairly recently and wondered what prompted it. Have not seen any notification regarding the change. I have used material that wasn't my own (with permission) and marked it as such; no points for it, it's just to pass on info.

I wrote a post about reblogging a couple of weeks ago asking AR to consider a change.  This wasn't it, but I don't recall seeing this feature you speak of wasn't available when I wrote that post.

Olga and Johnny thanks for the comments.  You are more observant than I or it happened just yesterday. Or the day before.  I forget when I last posted here.

Olga I hate the look of the Kersplat symbol and the ambiguity of it.  Someone told me one big mama r.e. guru (in her own mind anyway) got caught by AR copying and pasting but I am sure it was her content reshared here and she took the kersplat.   If ontent is online I will share via a link and a quote and blather on and on about it (or not)  rather than copy and paste a whole post.  If Google picked up the AR version as the original I would feel horrible, even with permission to use.  You have no control.

Curious about the change you proposed Charita.  Off to read your post.

Yes Maureen,

That is a rel='canonical' link. That allows the search engine to give the main priority for the content in the blog post to the original source of the content. Kind of a 'best practice' as it relates to Google.

It just hit the site yesterday as a few people suggest.

I had not noticed until you pointed out, but now looking at it, it looks different. This is good, because now I can post to my original blog post on WP (If I'm understanding this correctly).

Debbie My thought is it will show with a symbol that some interpret as the scarlet letter. Or did.  I have not seen a lot of content with a kersplat on it lately.   You won't get points for it either.  Most members are very points oriented.   I think they need to do a little more "splaining."

Could you just insert the link into posts yourself?  Not use the "It is not my content?" because it is your content.  Switching back and forth to html got a lot easier recently on AR.  I always knew I could do this but I hate editing content in html, especially old content, so I avoided switching to html while posting unless absolutley necessary.  I also have not really been interested in posting the same content in two places, but run into so many people who are so concerned about doing so.

It's a lot easier now!

I assume this space at the bottom  part of the ongoing effort to make sure the original content on AR shows up in the SERPS.

My little experiment with my own content  is because so many members are concerned with posting the same content both here and a WP site.  It is not something that I want to do necessarily.  In my little experiment I did NOT post the content to my AR Outside blogs. I may go back and do that experiment when I have some time.   The bottom of an AR post has the line that tells the search engines the Outside blog's post is the original.  Not sure that is working.

If in my experiment I did post to my AR Outside blog would I have 2 canonical links?  The one that the Original URL content and one saying the original content is on my Outside blog?

Deleting comments with the link because they are stretching my AR blog too wide.
