I've been stood up!

When I’m showing homes to clients, I like to get to the first home early, turn on all the lights, close the toilet lids, and take care of anything major that needs to be taken care of.  Since I don’t always get to preview the homes first, it also gives me a few moments to ensure I know what exactly is in the home.  By the time the clients arrive, I’m all set to give them a good showing.

hour glassAccordingly, I schedule my time appropriately.  Since the area I support is relatively large geographically, I ensure I have time to get to my first showing, get it ready, show that one, show any other homes, and get to my next appointment in time.  I’m learning how much time is needed to do all that and am pretty good at keeping on schedule.  And I always confirm with my clients the day before.

Today I was meeting a new client and we were only going to see one home; a home I hadn’t previewed yet.  I confirmed the appointment with her yesterday, and today left for the appointment 35 minutes early, which gave me 20 minutes to get there, gave me 15 minutes to do my thing.  I turned on the lights, checked out the property, and waited.  And waited.  At 10 minutes after the appointed time, I called my client’s cell phone which rang and rang until it made it to voice mail.

I left a message, repeated the address we were meeting at, told her I was waiting, and indicated that if I didn’t hear anything in 10 minutes, unfortunately, I was going to have to leave and we’d have to reschedule.

I waited.   Nothing.  Not a word.

So, I turned off all the lights, packed myself up, and left for another 20 minute ride back to my office.  Seventy five minutes out of the work day, wasted.

Well, not totally wasted.  I did get to preview another home.

I felt like an excited young person, waiting for that hot date who never showed.

Sigh.

I actually picked up a woman at the airport in a blinding rainstorm, dropped her off at her hotel, picked her up an hour later and shower her property.  Next morning, meet her at 10 am in front of the Ritz................I was there..................

Don't you hate it!   You are left wondering, did they drive by already and did not like it, were they just lookers, or what?

Chris/Dick - Oh my!  That would have been even worse!  Talk about going out of your way in customer service!  Thanks for sharing.

Fred - I thought perhaps they were just forgetful or something, but you're right - maybe they already drove by, didn't want to see it, and didn't think the real estate agent deserved a call. :-(

I once ran over to the office on a cold rainy day, waited half an hour, no show. I had left the client two polite messages at first. The last one said "I hope you haven't been in an accident. If so, please call me later and we will reschedule. On the other hand, I've been here at the office waiting for you over a half hour. So if you are just a rude person who does keep appointments, please do not call me back."

Nope - never heard from them again. Was I being rude? I don't think so. And it was definitely more polite than what I wanted to say.

I hate being stood up. One thing I have learned is that they never answer the phone when you call to see where they are. I would wait and call sometime the next day. If I have been stood up, I am at some point going to speak to them. It really doesn't change anything but I seem to feel better.

Joyce - They were probably afraid to call you back!  :-)  Thanks for stopping by!

Betty - I'm not sure whether I'll call them again or just wait to see if they call me.   Maybe I'll call tomorrow as you suggest.

That's such a shame, and I'm sure it's happened to all of us at one time or another. It's even worse when you've made an appointment with the seller or tenant and they've been kind enough to leave the house with their kids and their dogs. Then you're still standing there when they come back. I hate that most of all!

Kat....it hasn't happened a lot to me but I really hate that.  How hard is it to send an email or text cancelling if you don't want to have a conversation?

That is terrible.  So sorry to hear that Kat.  I sort of had 2 "no shows" but in a different way this week.  They were also confirmed.  I was on the street for the first customer and couldn't find the house...she said she called the office 2 hrs before to cancel (and there was no message/no missed call), and the other one spaced out and gave the job to someone else and forgot to call us.  A waste of time and gas.

Suzi - Ugh, at least in this case all those arrangements didn't have to be made, but that would definitely stink!

Christine - Exactly.  An email or text would have worked.  Anything!!  Still no word of course.

Debbie - Argh! That sure was a waste of time, and basically had the same impact as a "no show."  Grrrrr.

Kat - Seems like it happens to me most when I schedule to show a rental. I left a message once for a no-show reminding them how rude it was to not call if you were not going to show. Never heard from them again...

Peter - I find that people who are rude don't care that you know they're rude! :-)  I haven't had any rental clients not show, although I have had a few "disappear" afterwards.  Sigh.  They didn't want a second date!

I hate to say that this has happened to most of us. Most of the time, if they stand me up, I never hear from them again no matter how I try Kat 🤕
