Richard Sweum:  The "Tie" does NOT go to "The Runner!!!"

Everyone should be open to instruction now and then, as well as examine their hard held beliefs and core values.  The ability to self-examine and reflect with courage is one of the few things that separate us from other primates.   A significant portion of my life is spent watching my kids play baseball.  It is almost just as much fun to watch and listen to the parents.   The things parents say...

Well... one of the things that they say that drives me bug-nuts is when they are challenging the umpire's call OR affirming the umpires call about a runner being "out," or "safe."   Let's get this straight, there is no such allowance for a "tie" in baseball rules of any level or league.  The runner must "beat" the throw or the tag---that is the only way that a runner can reach a contested base safely.  Anything less... "YOU'RE OUT!!!"

Over and over again, I hear this and I just want to grab someone buy the ears and shake some reality into their paradigm.  We keep believing what we believe, even though it is dead wrong, because we are not open to instruction, new information, and because we don't choose to have the courage to self examine.

Two things seem harder to say than most others:  1) I'm sorry; and 2) I was wrong.   What is so painful about these two phrases that makes us hang on to completely false paradigms.  More on this later...  but let's challenge ourselves to take our own lives and paradigms under close scrutiny.  Illumination to reality brings oneself peace and tranquility.
