Door County Real Estate: Gills Rock: A commercial fishing community in Door County, Wisconsin.
Welcome to the Town of Liberty Grove (population of appoximately 1900) which features the unincorporated commercial center of GILLS ROCK, WISCONSIN 54210 (with 290 residing in Gills Rock as per the 2010 census).
Gills Rock is a true commercial fishing village. As such, I am honored to be a part of Door County’s commercial fishing heritage. As regulations get more stringent and actual species begin to disappear—first herring, then “lawyers” (burbot), then perch, now chubs, it becomes more and more difficult for the local commercial fisherman to survive. This is a rugged and rural area of Liberty Grove, and it's not an uncommon site for residents and visitors to wait on the dock for today's fresh catch to bring home and cook for dinner that evening.
Common fishery names like Weborg, Teskie, Henriksen, Hickey and Johnson, amongst others, carry instant recognition in this area. Looking for some smoked chubs? Maybe Charlie Henriksen was able to catch some to be smoked at Charlie’s Smokehouse. Want to attend a Door County fish boil at Pelletier’s or the White Gull Inn? Your fish may have been freshly caught that morning by Teskie Fisheries or Weborg Fisheries.
The Door County commercial fisheries are fantastic to visit, but do so with caution—dangerous equipment is in use and it can be slippery. If you get a chance to visit, visit the docks to see if you can get some fish fresh off the boat. The older fisherman may even invite you out for a ride to lift nets (don’t forget your Dramamine, fishing is tough business, and sea sickness is prevalent for rookies).
