Hurricane season is now upon us in Northern Virginia and along the East Coast. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this year’s hurricane season is already on track to be above normal. The hurricane season forecast states we have a 70 per cent chance of an above normal season. NOAA has stated that from August to November 30th, there will be as many as 6 to 9 hurricanes across the Atlantic Basin. This range is above the 30-year season average.

The entire East Coast has been drastically impacted by hurricanes the past two years, with Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Sandy in 2012. Northern Virginia’s most serious storms in recent years were Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Isabel. Hurricanes can be devastating, and preparedness is key. By having supplies on hand and an emergency plan, your family and home will be able to handle whatever the storm brings.

A hurricane survival kit should contain batteries, flashlights, and water, as well as any medications or necessary personal items. Replace or restock these as needed. In cases of a hurricane watch or warning, listen to NOAA Weather Radio for updated information. When a watch occurs, fill up cars with gas, and move the vehicle to an elevated area if possible to avoid flooding. Turn off propane tanks. Move any loose items from the yard, such as lawn furniture or bicycles. Anything that can be blown away should be tied up safely or put indoors. Protect your home’s windows by closing all windows and hurricane shutters. If you don’t have hurricane shutters, it’s recommended to board up windows and doors with plywood. To keep food fresh, turn the refrigerator and freezer to the coldest settings. Try to avoid opening fridge and freezer doors in order to keep the cool temperature. This will help in case of power failure. If the watch progresses to a warning, be sure to listen to updates from the Weather Service, and obey any evacuation instructions.
