Pedestrian Tales From the Middle of the Road, #53

Well, we couldn't roll into a hoilday weekend without a bit of a pedestrian safety wake-up call, could we?  This story, courtesy of the Orlando Sentinel, reflects yet another example of how folks around here simply can't stay out of the street...

This is another sad story of how a dead pedestrian who's left an empty seat at tomorrow's Thanksgiving dinner table.

This is yet another failure of yours, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings and Orlando Police Chief Paul Rooney.  A bit of effort toward enforcing our pedestrian traffic laws would go a long way toward saving lives- and who knows?  It might've saved this one.

Jaywalker hit, killed by car on Goldenrod Road

A 22-year-old driver early Wednesday struck and killed a pedestrian with his car as the victim was jaywalking across Goldenrod Road, troopers said.

The man died at the scene. His name has not been released by Florida Highway Patrol.

Around 1:50 a.m. Wednesday, Taylor Castrianni was driving southbound on Goldenrod at State Road 408 in a Toyota Camry, a report said.

The pedestrian walked into the path of Castrianni's car, FHP said.

The man landed on the windshield of the car before being thrown to the ground, the report stated.

Castrianni suffered minor injuries, FHP said.

The crash remains under investigation.

What a tragedy, Dennis.  Not just for the guy who died, but for the Driver (assuming that he is someone with a conscience).

Hi, Fred:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Indeed- and will surely make for him and his family having a Thanksgiving that's more crappy, less happy.  Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, though!

One thing I notice when going to other cities around the United States is how pedestrians in other places actually cross at the crosswalks. It seems around Florida that pedestrians believe that they can just cross anywhere.  The result is what you describe all too often.  They definitely need to get a ticket for this.  Not sure how else to educate the stupidity of some people.

To many Peds think they can walk where they want, but, once dead, always dead.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  Exactly.  As I've mentioned for a few years now (hard to believe it's been that long), I've literally been around the world a few times.  I've lived in and/or visited big cities and small ones, ones up North and ones down South.  But never, ever, anywhere else have I witnessed the craziness like we have going on here.

I've mentioned it to my family members and friends that have never ventured down this way, and they think I've lost my mind- until I show them pictures or video.  It's truly amazing- and like "awesome", amazing isn't always a good thing.

Also, I may have mentioned it previously (can't remember right now), but I went and spoke about this at a MetroPlan Orlando board meeting.  They're continuing their work on our region's long-range transportation plan, and part of it involves a program called Best Foot Forward, etc.  They seem to have all bases covered, so to speak- even including "Enforcement" as one of the "3 E's" they mention in the plan for improving safety.

Problem is that their enforcement is limited to motorists- with an emphasis on enforcing things on the pedestrian side of things being what one can only view as pitiful.

While mid-block crashes are the pedestrians' fault a vast majority of the time (their numbers, not mine), law enforcement continues their ways in refusing to hold said pedestrians accountable.
