What has seemed to be a relic from the past for years is now almost gone. The 50 year old Key West Trailer Park at 1015-1025 Simonton, across from the Gato Building is almost packed up and gone. Developer, Southernmost Cabana Resort LLC, owned by Joe Cleghorn was bought from the Catholic Church for $2.4 million dollars in April of 2009. The park always seemed an anomaly of incredibly old rustic mobile homes nestled in the tress behind the chain link fence. Entire families lived in 200 to 400 square foot structures amid the hustle and bustle of Key West and the visiting suntan-lotioned tourists.
Florida trailer parks continue to vanish along with drive-in theaters and bowling alleys. This park will become a community with a Home Owner’s Association, shared pool and individual parking. 44 mobile homes will be transformed into 21 single family homes and townhouses, none to have metal siding or wheels.
