My Top 3 Peeves about Reality Real Estate TV Shows

By
Real Estate Agent with Frankly Real Estate Inc.

My family & I enjoy watching a few home improvement and flipping real estate reality shows. They are fun! Who wouldn’t enjoy them. We’ll they are not as fun when you're in the field, as a professional real estate agent and the expectations from those “reality shows” can’t be met in reality.

Thumbs down!My Top 3 Peeves:

  1. Buyers unrepresented, approaching the listing agent to “write up an offer”

  2. Selling a home in one day via open house and over asking price

  3. Showing buyers three houses and then writing an offer that get’s accepted.

By sharing only my top two peeves, I’m refraining from getting on my soap box. I’d just like to share a simple reminder, “that’s not how it works” in this commercial from esurance, Beatrices friend/former friend shares her disapproval with B’s understanding of facebook. Her facial expressions and words are right on the money for reality real estate shows too.

Remember, tv shows are for entertainment purposes, including the news. Reality tv is an oxymoron at it’s best. Buying and selling real estate is serious business, not for entertainment.

I haven't watched on of these in years. Of the old ones I remember one where the superimposed the amount of commission on the screen and then the agent would call someone and in glee talk about how much he made. I also do not watch reality TV because I get enough reality every day and these shows to me aren't real.

My fiance watches these shows. I'm amazed at how they say how much to it took to flip a house which is usually not believable.

I admit that I occasionally view some of those shows for fun. But you are right about it affecting the expectations of buyers and sellers. All the more reason for us to educate our clients right from the beginning!

You're right about that!   Entertainment and little basis in real estate reality

Joe ~ I remember that one too. I only saw it a few times. Ridiculous.

Kevin ~ Right! Frequently, not a word about permits, all the materials are always available and the budget is fluid.

Tom ~ Professionals could view them as comedy.

Liz & Bill ~ Thanks, it makes me crazy. I usually have to leave the room.

Diane, good observation. Reality shows are a long ways from reality. Selling a home is not as simple as they portray it.

Make it a great day in the real world.
