Choosing Paint Colors - what's popular this year?

Reblogger Lori Cain

Here's what a North Carolina builder reports as trending paint colors this year.  Home Sellers often ask me for paint color suggestions, and I'm afraid I always fall back on some boring winter wheat or lambs wool color.  I'm really liking some of the colors in this post and hope you will enjoy it also! Should I Use Grey Paint in My New Home?

Paint color choices will guide the design, style, and aesthetic of your new home - whether you love colors in Benjamin Moore's Aura, Sherwin-Williams's Duration, or another designer collections.

Because your home's wall colors will reflect your taste and personality, we've compiled tips for choosing the perfect palette to suit your lifestyle - with a heads up on the most popular wall colors in 2014 new homes.

Grey Paint Trends

Shades of grey have been hugly popular for the past several years, popping up as a motif in million dollar homes, contemporary designs, and craftsman style lodges.

While we do expect to see fewer greys dominating the color wheel, shades of grey - especially those with a strong blue hue - will continue to popular in 2014 new homes.

Design Tip: Grey walls are soothing, and they flow easily through your home, making it easy to decorate with bold splashes of color.

In this custom home, shades of lavender were chosen as a feminine accent to offset the masculine grey tones. Clear lavender hardware was added to the white kitchen island. The pantry was also painted in a light lavender.

Bright, bold, and blue

This year, we are seeing some exuberance popping into new home paint palettes.

Home Paint Colors

Bright colors are all coming in - blues, corals, yellows, pinks, reds - with a continuance of greens.

Blues, in particular, are making a strong statement in new homes.

Design Tip: When choosing between a light and dark blue tone, remember that light blues blend beautifully with ligh creams, whites, and tans, while navy blues and indigos make more of a statement with bold metalics and earthy browns.

Interior and Exterior SymmetryChoosing Paint Colors - Interior Design Color

When choosing paint colors for your home, try to maintain symmetry as you move from the exterior to the interior.

If you select exterior stone siding with tons of earthy tones, consider tans, taupes, and greens for the interior.

In this photo, the green-inspired interior paint color pulls out the darker tones in the fireplace stone - which is the same stone that was used on the exterior front porch columns.

Design Tip: Once you find a color you love, consider going one or two shades lighter OR one or two shades darker on the same color sample strip.

By staying on the same color sample, you will have two professionally-matched colors to alternate throughout your home, depending on the room size and style.

I always find when they announce the new colors for the year some are really out there. I am a strong believer it keeping walls less 'rainbow like' and using great accent  pieces in your room instead.  Keeping walls neutral (and again this doesn't mean boring neutral) just different great shades that you won't get tired of in a year.

Just an observation. THanks for a great blog.
