We Love Our Bar-b-que

If you ask what Kansas City is known for, my guess the answer you would receive is "Barbeque".  That is certainly the answer that you would get from members of my family.  Now, agreeing on where to get the best barbeque or which is the best sauce....well....opinions will differ.ok joe

Our son, Thomas, would tell you it is from a restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas, found in a gas station, called Oklahoma Joe'sFood is tasty, the sauce is spicy (which he loves), and the ambiance is unique.  The lines for lunch begin shortly after 11:00am and do not slow down till almost 2:00pm.

My brother-in-law, Bill Kunkel's favorite is Hayward's.  The sauce has a kick and is not sweet like some sauces tend to be.  The owner, Hayward Spears, opened his first restaurant in Overland Park back in 1972.  It was quite close to our house so when people came in from out-of-town my father would take us all to Hayward's.  The food truly is good but the memories are even better.

Now if you were to ask my husband, David, or my brother, Jeff, my bet is that they would want the grill, a good cut of meat, and some bbq sauce from Jack Stack.  If you noticed, no mention was made of weather conditions.  They are true BBQ men...who cares if it is raining or there is a foot of snow!   There is bbq to be made and they are the one's to make it!!  No complaints here as I do enjoy the fruits of their labor.

True, there are more BBQ restaurants in the greater Kansas City area (more than 100) but that is for another day.

Ooohhh.  Are we gonna talk about BBQ?  This is my baby.  We cuddle up about 250 times a year.  Had the innards re-done and it is connected to a permanent gas line coming from the house.  Meat, poultry...on the racks and on the, drum-roll, rotisserie.  Yummmm

Everyone knows the best Bar-B-Que is in TEXAS! In Texas the best is at Louie Muellers in Tayor Texas!

This restaurant, located in the barbecue capital of Taylor about 35 miles northeast of Austin, is housed in a barbecue joints so authentic it could be a movie set, one complete with a slamming screen door, smoke-covered walls, and giant fans that provide the only cool breeze on a hot summer day. The walls are streaked with smoke and dotted with local business cards now as dark as brown grocery sacks thanks to the smoky haze.

Not one to waste money on fancy gimmicks like plates, Mueller's serves their barbecue on a piece of white butcher paper. Don't waste time looking for a menu here either. There's a moveable letter board on one wall with the offerings. (A few letters are missing, but everyone knows what Louie Mueller's has, and everyone knows what he wants.) Pick from brisket, served regular or extra lean, sausage, pork ribs, chopped beef, or steak. Grab a tray, step up to the counter, and the cook will carve off a slice of meat to satisfy your own proportions.

For a side dish, opt for coleslaw, beans, or potato salad, a flavorful mixture of mashed potatoes spiced with onions and celery.

Meats are served with a cup of sauce on the side; the tomatoey broth is spiced with a Texas-sized helping of black pepper. Not hot enought? Look for bottles of homemade vinegar and chili pepper sauce on every table.

Danny--I have heard of Louie Mueller BBQ, either from watching Bobby Flay or from my Uncle Marvin (he lives in the Dallas area), but have not been there.  Maybe the next time we go for a visit.

Brrrr, Isn't it time for a Summer BBQ by now.

Lets get with the times - you make me shiver and I'm in the triple digit desert of Southern California - this is as good as a AC Blast.
