Why Are You Not Driving a Mercedes Benz?

I never expect someone to ask me this question until I had the chance of standing next to the seller of the property my buyers are pursuing.

While I was waiting for my buyers and septic inspector, the seller approached me and said that the check for the clean-up is on the counter top. We were talking about the water view and the neighborhood then his eyes roamed to where my car was parked.

Then he asked, "Why are you not driving a Mercedes Benz."  I know that his listing agent drives this luxury car. But I found it bizarre that he would bring that up.

The only answer I could give for such unusual question is to answer him with a question. "What is wrong with my car?"

He raised his hand and shook it up in the air-- a gesticulation that meant forget what I said.

Are we judged by the wheels we are driving?

In the Gatsby movie, cars are symbolic of the owners'social status.

So does driving a Mercedes Benz manifest a top-producing agent?

Does an agent driving a minivan suggest that she is a part-time practitioner with kids?

How about an SUV? The agent is a full-time licensee with kids?

What do you think of an agent behind the wheels of a sports car? Is he/she daring and aggressive?

Will a consumer hire an agent driving a dirty and beat-up car?

When all these thoughts came to my mind last night, I asked two of my clients if the car I was driving when I first met them left an impression that could have optimized the reason why they chose me.

Both of them said "No." They did not even pay attention to it.

Then I interviewed another couple. "Would you hire a Realtor who is driving a dirty and beat-up car?" They think that most Realtors who are driving luxury cars are more pretentious and are not trustworthy. They would rather hire a Realtor who has a beat-up and dirty car with good reputation.

On the other hand, somebody else said that he would be hesitant to hire a licensee/Realtor who shows up for an initial meeting with a dirty car.

If I were to put myself in the prospects' shoes only, would the car the candidates/interviewees are driving matter?

Usually, when I screen my tenants, I peek at their car's windows to see the interior. If I see trash everywhere like empty Dunkin Donuts cups and crumpled brown paper bags, I would, in most cases, reject the tenant's application.

Ergo, I would not put weight on the brand or model of the vehicles but would certainly pay attention to the appearance inside and out.

Does the cliche "Don't judge a book by its cover apply?" Certainly, this adage has its strength but has its weakness too. There are giveaways that are worth taking into consideration.

It is funny: ''what is wrong with my car?!'':)

I drive Prius these days and love it. But hybrids are like loop hole out of luxury cars( not so many realtors can afford a Tesla!) and we love green style of living in L.A.

Hi Maria - congrats on the feature and all of the comments!  Cars do matter, as does dress, hair, nails and shoes.  I had instances where folks looked down on me for my car and others who admired that I drove my car into the ground like they did (shows logic/frugality).  I say, drive what you like.

The car we drive, just like the clothes and accessories we wear and carry is just another reflection of our character. Personnally I just went from a Hyundai to a Mercedes-Benz and have noticed that people do respond differently...

Maria, wow, did you generate a lot of interest on this post. It's obvious that some people will judge the vehicle, some will judge the inside of the vehicle, and others will not care about the vehicle at all. I am one that doesn't really care about the vehicle, I care about the people.

There are some very wealthy people who are slobs, and some that don't drive fancy cars. On the opposite side of the spectrum, there are people not so wealthy who drive a mercedes or BMW, but can't really afford it.

That's why I don't really care about what people drive, wear, or look like.

Maria - I love this post. For me, having a messy, run-down vehicle say one thing - I am also messy and run-down. Now, does that mean you have to drive a luxury car? I don't think so. It's more important that your car be clean and presentable, just like you must also be clean and presentable. I purchased a Mazda CX5, not a luxury car but a FANTASTIC car for real estate.

I don't drive a luxury vehicle, but I do drive a SUV and I've never been judge on it.  However, my clients have pointed out to me that my tags expired.  I believe that most people pay more attention to your integrity, skills and knowledge.

I given this question much consideration as a new agent!  The truth is...I drive a pickup truck,  wear jeans and boots.  You know why?  Because that's what I drove before I started selling RE.  I would rather be 100% geniune and real, even if it cost me a client occassionally.  I do not doubt people judge us for the way we dress and what we drive.  I decided I would prefer be myself and sell myself based on my work ethic and honesty.  I can be a better agent than the next guy if they only thing he has on me is a new car :)

I met a new client this summer at an appartment complex he was interested in.  I did not know him from Adam.  I just happed to answer the phone when he called our RE office.  I showed up in khaki pants and drove my wife's 2007 minvan.  We made an $640,000 offer on the apartment complex and have been working closely together ever since.  AND HE DRIVES A 2015 CORVETTE. He has been one of my most loyal clients.  He continues to use me to make offers on investment homes even though we have no formal agreement.

Thank you for posting! I always enjoy these converstations!

When I get in the Ferrari... it's a whole different world than when I pull up in my truck. Amazing how people can act so differently.  not to change the subject but tatoos are another image changer. I have showed some real estate where the people had tatoos and the selling agent thought they were unemployeed... haha...I'm like, they make more money than you do... ops...

Maria:

Some people fake it until they make it. The real important question for me is "are you buying what you are selling?" I am always surprised at how many real estate agents own a nice car but no real estate. hmmmm.

GIVING YOUR DREAMS AN ADDRESS

I think having a clean, inviting car is key. It shouldn't be about the tag, brand, model or make. (As a seller)... if my prosecptive agent rolled up in a 92' mazda 626 with rust and body damage, I would honestly question their ability to sell my house. Call me crazy but in the beginning, all I have is the cover to judge you by.  In the same sense, having a luxury vehicle doesn't prove to me that you are going to get the job done either.  Just like the way you dress, your car is a reflection of you.  If it is clean and it reflects that you take care of it... we are good to go.

Interesting.... we both have driven Mercedes and other luxury cars since we opened... not to impress others as much as to lift our own spirits... In fact we just bought a Tesla... and if folks think we think who we... when it comes to real estate.... they are right... we think we're awesome and we're very successful....

Maria, great post. What you drive is all about your taste.  We do know, however, that the car you drive says a lot about who you are. As agents though, we need to be conscious of the circumstances we find ourselves in.  If we are selling luxury homes, we don't want to arrive on the door steps of our client in a dirty beat-up car.  If working with a seller in default, we do not want to park our Mercedes Benz opposite their home. Nothing wrong with parking some distance away from the home.

Well call me crazy but, after reading this blog I got to thinking about a new car.  Love the Prius but mine is five years old and starting to show wear and tear.  Just leased a beautiful  C Class Mercedes over the weekend.  Smaller, elegant and drives  like a dream.  Still have the Prius for running around but love the feel and smell of the new car!  It will be interesting to see the impact on my business....if there is any.  So thanks Maria!  I now have a new car!

Fantastic upgrade Ann!  I am excited for you... Prius to Mercedes....your business should go from mobile homes to water view estates! lol

Seriously that's a major upgrade and it's like wearing a suit to a closing instead of the jeans that your client(s) may be wearing.

Saved this one to comment when I had more time to read the entire post.  Very good, thought provoking post. I'd rather be hired because I drive an SUV that is clean and it's a Hybrid saving gas, comfortable ride for passengers, and less polution.  I can't believe the guy asked why you didn't drive a Mercedes, a bit presumptious!
