Spotlight on Turtle Bay, Manhattan

Turtle Bay is a neighborhood situated on the east side of Midtown Manhattan. It is located between 41st and 43rd Streets and extends cross-town from Lexington Avenue to the East River. The neighborhood is home to such landmarks as the headquarters of the United Nations and the Chrysler Building.

Turtle Bay was originally the name given to a small cove in the East River during the 17th century. The cove was eventually filled in after the Civil War, and the area was developed with brownstones. However, not long after that, the Turtle Bay became overrun with commercial enterprises, bursting with breweries, slaughterhouses, coal yards, gasworks, and railroad piers, and by 1939 the area was considered “a riverside backyard” to New York City, filled with industrial enterprises and seedy tenement housing. Redevelopment of the area began in the 1920s, with residential areas like Turtle Bay Gardens and Tudor City greatly revitalizing the area. The building of the UN headquarters in 1948 brought the final wave of renovations to Turtle Bay. As of 2011, there has been talk of expanding the UN campus, as well as constructing an esplanade along the East River for waterfront pedestrian and bicycle use.

These days, it’s easy to forget that Turtle Bay is part of Midtown East, as the area feels distinctly different from the noise and bustle of the rest of Midtown. With tree-lined streets, delicious restaurants representing every corner of the globe, and a diverse community, Turtle Bay is a haven of lower Manhattan. Due to its wide range of housing prices, Turtle Bay remains a diverse area and has been attracting a younger crowd in recent years, though it is still quite common to see diplomatic license plates on the cars lining the streets. Buildings range from affordable rental units to million dollar penthouses. Classic 19th century brownstones and pre-war apartments, like the co-ops of Tudor City and Beekman Place, make up much of the architecture. However, a smattering of new condos offer a different option for those more interested in modern amenities.  The area is particularly appealing to young families, due to its many parks and proximity to Grand Central Station
