I'm a Filmmaker. Should I buy a home in Atlanta?

It's no secret.

The film and television industry is Big, I mean HUGE in Georgia!

So much so, we are ranked as the Number 3 film production location after Los Angeles and New York.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

Now, MovieMaker.com has ranked Atlanta the Best Place to Live as a Filmmaker!!!!

As I often say....."Awesome Sauce!"

You might not ever have—or want—to leave. With so many actors, writers, directors and producers in the city, you can schedule your next big meeting at one of Atlanta’s 132 Waffle House locations instead of flying to some vaulted office thousands of miles away. Waffles, grits and a greenlight? Win-win-win."

I've certainly noticed the market, and have done all I can to help people moving here. (See my list of Facebook Pages below!) But many come here with the idea it will be a temporary move, and as such are looking just to rent. But with the industry the way it is, maybe buying might not be such a bad thing?

While condo life probably makes sense for most people in the industry (lock it and leave if you go to film on location somewhere else; no yard and stuff to take care of), you might be better off looking at buying a single family home instead.

Why?

Well, first off, it's bigger. Don't need all those bedrooms? You can RENT your extra space to traveling crew that truly don't want to (or maybe can't afford to) buy. And if you were to leave, be it permanently or just for a time, you can sub-let out the entire house.  Condos have strict rental policies, and most of them have a wait list from here to LA (well not really..but more like 4+ years before you will get a leasing permit) so that would not be a short term option by any means.

But we can sit down and talk all the options and see what works best for you. It might still be to rent.

But than again, you just might want to get some of the Georgia clay on your boots. And I don't mean from being on location!

This is a great post Thom.  You need to be posting a link on some Hollywood pages on social media.

Good Saturday morning Thom Abbott -

I'm surprised Albuquerque didn't make the list as well.  Many movies and TV series are shot here and yes, many actors end up buying in our area.  The first million plus home I sold years ago was to an movie actor who fell in love with the area while filming.

John McCormack  I'm sure it has to do with volume. It seems now at any given time, we have 30-45 productions underway.

Thom,  this is a great marketing piece!  My daughter works in the film industry and many friends have leased or purchased  places to live in Atlanta.  I'll refer any others that I hear about to you.

Any suggestions as to which area of Atlanta is best to move to as a filmmaker? I'm freelance and moving to Atlanta in a couple months, but I don't know which area is closest to film hot spots. Thanks!

Jessica, in Atlanta it is best to be as central as you can, and close to a freeway to make it easier to get around. So inside the Perimeter (I-285) an probably on the Northern side. So think/look at cities like Chamblee, Doraville, Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Buckhead.
