Birds in Blizzard of January 2016 in SE Pennsylvania

By

The blizzard of 2016 is upon us here in Delaware County PA and not letting go. Strong winds keep the snow moving so any shoveling one does is rather fruitless. Reports on the radio tell of stories where people have ventured out in their cars only to get stuck in snow drifts that have formed across the road.

Yesterday I stocked the bird feeder and sure enough the birds have been visiting the feeder most of the day. This type of weather pulls birds together in my observations. They have more tolerance for each other. The juncos are more visible and a female cardinal has joined the crowd.   A song sparrow digs in the snow with its feet to get at buried seeds. A few squirrels ventured out earlier in the day, but that was it for their forays in the snow.

The wind keeps howling and the snow keeps blowing.  Mother Nature has given us a big storm, bringing everything to a near halt here in the Philadelphia area.  Be safe everyone.

Gloria-Looks like my bird feeding area minus the wind chimes. Surprised it doesn't scare the birds. Hunger must win out.

About 8-10" which is a lot for here plus that sleet last night will make shoveling difficult.

Sharon Lee hope the shoveling went okay.  We have a little more to do today.  22 inches here.  Hope that is all we get this winter!

Gloria Todor -I shoveled just enough to get the car out and for my brother to pull in back of me. I too hope this is the last of it just it is only Jan. so most likely we will get more but hopefully not as much. 22" is at least twice what we got and that was plenty.

I am so envious of parts of the country that have Cardinals.  We don't have them here in Sacramento.

Sharon Lee good to have helping hands when shoveling!

Myrl Jeffcoat those cardinals just do not seem to want to venture over those Rocky Mountains!  Yes they are beautiful in the snow...and any time of the year!

I hope you are recovering from the blizzard without damage.

We still have much snow to clear in Maryland.

Your video stirs up lots of wintry memories. Isn't it something how they get along when there's a blizzard and a need for food to survive? Why can't people do the same?

I could hear the wind blowing in your video. It must have been very cold and windy for you to do that. Thank you. It means a lot to me and birds do too.

Thank you Roy Kelley ! We had no problems from storm direclty, just heavy shoveling.  No snowblower

Thank you Patricia Feager, MBA, GRI, Cert Negotiations Expert, Military Relo Prof for your kind words.  In snow storms I always end up having to put out more seed as the snow just covers it over.  That song sparrow in the video does a good job of digging for the seed.  More snow is expected in the next 48 hours but nothing like the blizzard.  Hope you are well.  Have a great 2016!

Gloria Todor I didn't know you were expected to receive more snow within the next 48 hours. In my area, the weather reporters focus more on local news which irritates me because I think we all have family and friends in different parts of the United States and it would be nice to hear it all, not just local news.

I am doing fine - thank you for asking. I still remember a post you wrote long ago about not feeling well. I think it had to do with deer ticks. I hope you are and will remain healthy. Those fine feathered friends depend on you for food! They bring so much joy to us, don't they? I've been a bird lover my whole life and I'm glad there are people like you caring for them, especially in adverse weather conditions.
