Lesson Learned From Horses:  Body Language Speaks Louder Than Words

Lesson Learned From Horse: Body Language Speaks Louder Than Words

When I first began working Pippa, I couldn't understand why she was getting frustrated at times during training.  It had been a while since I had trained green horses, and since she was a very willing horse, I began to look at myself for the answers.

I started paying close attention to my body language.  After all, that is how horses communicate with each other.  Sure enough, that was where the problem lied.  She was getting mixed signals from me.  My body was saying one thing while verbally and in thought I was saying something else.  No wonder she was confused and frustrated.  She couldn't figure out what I really wanted from her.  Being a very sensitive horse, she picked up on every little signal from my body language.

The same is true when working with consumers and clients.  When you first meet the consumer or client, what is your body language saying?  Is your body expressing the same things as your words and your thoughts?

Does your body language say:

-  I am focused on you?

-  I am projecting confidence?

-  I am very pleasant?

-  I can be trusted?

-  I am defensive?

-  I am happy to be of assistance to you?

We all must become aware of our body language, because this is what the consumer or client (or horse) is subconsciously listening to.

Good point Brigita McKelvie I do my best to give a very strong handshake and keep eye contact when I meet someone. Staying focused is so important. Also when visiting with someone it's a great idea to turn the cell phone OFF.

Great points on body language Brigita!  Even down to where the person is looking when you talk to them (certain directions are common when lying, others are common when "searching" your memory for an answer).

Ryan,

Most are not aware of their body language.  It's surprising how much you can find out by reading the body.

Working with horses is a great way to get a feel for your body language and what you are portraying!  My horses are deaf so they are very sensitive to visuals and to what signals you send when you are sitting on them.  It doesn't take much to get them to respond to ques on the ground or riding.  I am learning that simple, non confrontational, direct and clear communications work best with horses and Clients!

Deb,

My OTTB is very sensitive.  She picks up on every small body cue.  I have learned to be more conscious of what my body is saying since I started training her.  This also helps in my business.

Michael,

Body language tells us a lot no matter if it is human or animal.  It is the universal language.
